Ghost Pipefish

Ghost pipefish (Solenostomus). Their name ghost pipe fish comes, because you suddenly found or seen them. They are staying only a few days or weeks in the same place before they disappear like a ghost.

There are only six officially recognised species of it.

Ghost pipefish you found in the eastern Indo-Pacific, but also in the Red Sea (Egypt). They living in shallow waters, between 5 to 30 meters and often in or near a feather star. You will found them only a few months in the year.

The Solenostomus actually starts life as a larva adrift in the currents of the oceans. After birth the ghost pipefish will start looking for a host, and will change the colour and the shape. After camouflage has reached the maximum level, the ghost pipefish will start to reproduce. Once fertilised, the female will carry up to 350 baby eggs and this the entire pregnancy. When the time comes to give birth, the female will move to a quiet environment to release the young babies.

Visit us in the water of Siaton and dive under with Cove Divers to see some of the incretipal species. There are of course much more to discover because we still have exclusive dive sites with no other dive center around in our area.
