In Nigeria, only a few things speak for themselves, you must otherwise question motives and seek hidden meanings of everything. One such thing that speaks for itself is the proposed law to regulate non-governmental organisations. The full name of the Bill reads: A Bill for an Act for the Establishment of the Non-Governmental Organizations Regulatory Commission for the Supervision, Co-ordination and Monitoring of Non-Governmental Organizations, Civil Society Organisations and related matters.

The words supervision, co-ordination and monitoring should strike a chord in the hearts of all those who have read George Orwell’s classic, 1984 and the concept of a totalitarian state explored in the book. It is in the same breathe that the new NGO Bill proposes that all existing NGOs in Nigeria be placed under the roving eyes of government or simply, line up to be eliminated.

The Nigerian judiciary has displayed varying reactions to vitriolic comments by members of the executive arm of government, choosing many times to ignore the attacks while issuing strong statements to assert its innocence and fairness on some occasions. On Monday, 18th September, 2017, the judiciary gave its most assertive response yet by announcing the establishment of special corruption courts as a measure of support for ongoing efforts to tackle corruption.
