A Fateful Encounter
On this day in 1911, Olympic (Yard No. 400) was badly damaged on her fifth voyage following a collision in the Solent with the Royal Navy cruiser HMS Hawke. Olympic’s voyage to New York was cancelled and the vessel was eventually sent to Belfast for accident repairs to be carried out, forcing Harland & Wolff to delay the completion of Titanic. Interestingly, Olympic was under the command of Captain Edward Smith at the time of the incident, the man who would go on to captain Titanic on her maiden voyage.

Titanic Discovered!

On Sunday 1 September 1985 Dr Robert Ballard, leader of a US/French team of oceanographers, finally discovered the wreck of RMS Titanic, a ship unseen for 73 years, and long believed to be beyond discovery and beyond reach.

The first images of the vessel captured on video tape showed the twisted and corroded remains of the once mighty White Star liner lying in two sections at a depth of 12,460 feet (3,798 metres) in the North Atlantic.

The search for Titanic occupied several weeks and not until pictures of debris and one of the vessel's boilers was identified were the team convinced they had finally found the the world's most famous ship.

Countless expeditions to the wreck site and a number of controversial salvage operations have only increased interest in this famous disaster.

For Belfast the discovery of Titanic brought mixed feelings, a fascination with the images, but also time to remember Thomas Andrews and his team who perished with the ship they helped to build.

Titanic Belfast, the world's largest Titanic-themed visitor attraction, opened on the 100th anniversary of her loss and remembers all those lost in this terrible disaster.

Dr. Robert Ballard and Bill Lange, leader of the Advanced Imaging Department at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, helped to create the underwater theatre at the Titanic Belfast visitor attraction - for further information visit http://www.TitanicBelfast.com
