Bastia v Nice – can Nice regain top spot in Ligue 1?
Bastia v Nice. After topping Ligue 1 and taking French football by storm, OGC Nice have finally been knocked into second. While reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain were expected to canter to the trophy with their usual ease, it is in fact Monaco that are the form side – they are the top scorers from all of Europe’s major leagues with 60 goals. Their astonishing attack has seen them go first on goal difference over Nice, with PSG just three points behind.
However, Les Aiglons play away to Bastia on Friday night and so have the chance to restore their advantage. This may only be temporary, but with half the season played it shows that they are serious contenders. At the very least, Lucien Favre will now demand a top three finish which would result in Champions League football. The club, of course, came fourth last season, though have already been eliminated from the Europa League.
Bastia v Nice

Bastia should not prove to be the trickiest of opponents – being just outside the relegation zone – though it was a 1-1 draw when the two teams met back in November. Based on the island of Corsica, Bastia are in 17th and just two points off bottom. Their season has so far been characterised by a toothless attack that has found the net just 17 times. Indeed, the Blues have lost their past three fixtures, including a 7-0 drubbing to PSG in the cup.
On a positive note, the closeness of the French league table means that mid-table safety is just six points away. The hosts will be coming up against the league’s best defence, though, so an uncharacteristic attacking display is required. OGC have conceded just 13 times, yielding just a single defeat – to Caen – all season.
All these statistics point towards only one outcome – an away win. Nice are 2.35 for three points to regain their top position on Friday, with a draw 3.30. Bastia’s odds of 3.25 show that they should not be entirely discounted, however a big improvement in attack is necessary.

Southampton v Norwich City – Alex Neil in need of a big result
http://ow.ly/kJft3087LTx
Southampton v Norwich City. Alex Neil’s future as Norwich City manager is unlikely to be determined by his side’s progress in the FA Cup, but a win against Southampton would certainly go some way towards keeping him in the hot seat.

Crystal Palace v Bolton Wanderers – Phil Parkinson plotting a cup upset
Crystal Palace v Bolton Wanderers. Bolton Wanderers performed admirably in the first third round encounter against Premier League team Crystal Palace, securing a 0-0 draw. Now they face the tough task of replicating that performance at Selhurst Park, where former manager Sam Allardyce is now at the helm. A repeat of that score after 90 minutes would see extra-time (3.10 at Tipbet) and a penalty shootout (5.00) used as options to separate the sides – putting the onus onto Palace to force the result in the allotted 90 minutes.
The winners will face a home tie against Manchester City on 29th January; another incentive for the Trotters as it would mean an intriguing local derby. After a diabolical season saw them relegated to League One, Phil Parkinson has overseen a marked improvement in performances. They are currently third, with a match in hand, and just six points off leaders Sheffield United. Automatic promotion is also very much a possibility and a victory at the home of an established Premier League side would represent an impressive result.
Crystal Palace v Bolton Wanderers

Allardyce’s record of having never been relegated from the top flight will be severely tested this season. Despite a huge outlay in the summer, the Eagles are only out of the bottom three on goal difference. This has been compounded by defeats to fellow strugglers Swansea City, while their latest outing was a 3-0 drubbing to West Ham. In fact, the Londoners have not tasted victory since 3rd December, so this places even more importance onto the cup tie, as it could help to shift the mentality and belief around the squad.
Wanderers will need to bounce back from their 2-1 defeat to Swindon Town as they seek a first win of 2017 themselves. Impressively, they have lost just six times in League One, so this has the ingredients of a cup upset.

The hosts have a much stronger squad and even if key men are rested, then they should have enough to get to the fourth round. They are 1.65 to win in 90 minutes, or 1.30 to reach the Manchester City tie by any means. Bolton, can be backed at 3.35 to advance or 5.50 within normal time.

Marseille v Monaco – AS look to keep up the pressure on Nice
Marseille v Monaco. The Ligue 1 title race is turning into one of the most intriguing for a number of seasons, with AS Monaco a major part of it. The standout statistic has been their remarkable goal-scoring form. With 56, they are one short of last season’s amount in half as many games. This is more than any of the clubs in Europe’s other major leagues, and 18 more than the next most in France – champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Everton v Manchester City – will Morgan Schneiderlin make an immediate impact for Everton?
Everton v Manchester City. Everton will be looking at new signing Morgan Schneiderlin for inspiration in the second half of their season. The Blues have had an underwhelming campaign so far, despite currently being in seventh. That is looking like the highest that they will finish, with the sides above them all involved in a title fight. However, Ronald Koeman’s task is to close the gap and he expressed frustration with the club’s transfer policy after being knocked out of the FA Cup against Leicester City. The Dutchman has since signed Ademola Lookman as well as Schneiderlin, though the cup loss means that they only have league fixtures.

Swansea v Arsenal – a must-win game for the Gunners
Swansea v Arsenal. Arsene Wenger will demand that his Arsenal side do not leave it so late to pick up maximum points at the Liberty Stadium. The Gunners’ last two games have seen them come from behind to draw with Bournemouth and then beat Preston in the FA Cup, with both results feeling slightly unsatisfactory for supposed Premier League title contenders.
A seemingly annual drop in results and performances has occurred once more, and was mostly apparent over the festive period with consecutive losses to Everton and Manchester City. To make it feel even more repetitive, the north Londoners have an incredibly tricky route to advance in the Champions League, where they face Bayern Munich despite finishing top of their group.

Algeria v Tunisia. After a disappointing 2-2 opening draw with Zimbabwe, Algeria can take a giant step towards qualification from Group B. They already two points off Senegal, meaning that the third match between the two could well decide which finishes first and, in theory at least, gets a more straightforward quarter final draw.
Senegal lead the way after a comfortable 2-0 victory over Tunisia, who cannot afford another defeat. The north Africans lack stellar names beyond Wahbi Khazri and Aymen Abdennour of Sunderland and Valencia respectively, though reached the last eight in 2015 after topping their group, only to be dumped out in extra-time by Equatorial Guinea.
Algeria v Tunisia
Algeria v Tunisia
In contrast, neighbouring country Algeria have a wide array of attacking talents – in particular 2016 African Footballer of the Year Riyad Mahrez. The Leicester man, of course, was a major reason for his club winning the Premier League, but has also shone in the Champions League and, despite lacking consistency this season, will be a constant threat having scored twice against Zimbabwe. The Desert Foxes also departed at the quarter final stage two years ago, losing to eventual winners Ivory Coast.
Tipbet has a big range of odds for AFCON 2017, including who will finish as top scorer. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, of the hosts Gabon, is 6.25 after scoring in his country’s opening match. Mahrez (8.50) is second favourite, though not far behind is his club-mate and compatriot Islam Slimani (16.2). Sadio Mane gave Senegal the lead in their win over Tunisia and the Liverpool forward can be backed at 10.2

Malaga v Real Sociedad – Sociedad can go fifth with victory
Malaga v Real Sociedad. The final match of the week 18 La Liga schedule takes place in Malaga in what is an important meeting for both teams. Real Sociedad are on the up once more after finishing ninth last season. They dispensed with David Moyes as manager, and without the Scot have looked an altogether more imperious side. Three points at the La Rosaleda Stadium would see them go into fifth after Villarreal’s draw at the weekend – that’s an automatic Europa League place.

Manchester United v Liverpool – United seek a seventh straight win
Manchester United v Liverpool. The biggest match in England this weekend is undoubtedly the meeting between two local rivals at Old Trafford. Manchester United against Liverpool evokes memories of fixtures past like no other game, and Sunday’s match is of big importance to both teams. It is possible that a United win would keep them in the title hunt; this glimmer of hope has been made possible by a sequence of six straight league victories, which began with a crucial 1-0 over Tottenham last month.

Leicester City v Chelsea – how will Chelsea respond to their Spurs defeat?
Leicester City v Chelsea. This intriguing match-up sees the Premier League holders welcoming possible champions-elect. Chelsea are many pundits’ tip to take the crown from Leicester City this year, following a spectacular start to life under the coaching of Antonio Conte. The west Londoners’ run of 13 consecutive victories fell one short of setting a new record in a single season, though it is the style of play that the Italian has implemented that is drawing most plaudits and making them so tough to beat.
Their statistics show a side that is strong in both attack and defence. With 42 scored and just 15 conceded, it is no surprise that their defeat to Tottenham was the first since September. What matters now is how the club responds, as their points gap is now down to just five points ahead of Liverpool. For the neutrals, at least, a six-way title battle seems to be on.
Leicester’s win last season has to go down as one of the most remarkable sporting achievements in team sport, though the Foxes have a battle on their hands just to get a respectable finish. Currently 15th, they have missed the tenacity and energy of N’Golo Kante in central midfield. It is likely that the Frenchman will line up for the away side and he is once again pivotal to a squad chasing the title.
Although Claudio Ranieri has struggled to have the same impact on England’s top division, his squad have shown that they can turn on their best form when required – this was displayed back in December with a 4-2 win over Manchester City. That should be a lesson enough that, especially at the King Power Stadium, three points have to be earned.
After being so strong defensively last year, City’s back four has been nowhere near as effective. Perhaps it is partly down to their, admittedly fantastic, maiden Champions League campaign and the extra workload that it brings, but a major reason for them sitting in 15th is in the lack of organisation and discipline; Kante’s work ethic in shielding the backline is sorely missed.
The leaders, as expected, are given favourites status by Tipbet at odds of 1.65. After the shock of losing a match, it is important that they respond immediately – particularly with games against Liverpool and Arsenal on the horizon. The home side can be backed at 4.00 for a draw or 5.50 for a win. Given the attacking talent that will be on display, both sides to score is 1.85.
Full Premier League odds can be seen here.
