I SAW JEFF MANGUM IN CONCERT THURSDAY AT THE OGDEN IN DENVER!!!
Anyone who knows me, or possibly even heard rumors of my obsession with Neutral Milk Hotel, knows how big of a deal this is. I think one of the most amazing things about it is I never thought I'd actually see him live, the front man of the band that broke and re-wired my musical brain. Aeroplane was the only album I listened to for over two years, seriously!
It was absolutely incredible. And, it was miraculous how I made it there.
The set started out with several acoustic songs, and then Scott Spillane and Laura Carter carefully marched many different instruments into the mix, tag teaming them back and forth, including many horns, an accordion, an electric saxophone, a tower of snare drums and more. A cello added to Naomi was so eerie and beautiful I wanted to cry and laugh hysterically at the same time.
Hopefully, I will have a chance to see Jeff live again, and bring friends with me to join in the surreal experience. Here is a live version of my favorite song of the night, specifically because it's so gorgeous and I'd never heard it before:Jeff Mangum performs Daniel Johnston's "True Love Will Find You In The End" at Jordan Hall, 9/10/11
