We’re meant to be talking about October 6 in ‘Riddle of the Sands’, but frankly this is a period in the book where not a lot is happening, and we’re essentially gearing up for the main spying actio...

The latest #rotsadventure  podcast is online. Tim (notCarruthers) finally goes sailing. Lloyd (notDavies) gets into island trains. Much talk about cows, horses and seals.

If you like what you hear, help us get out into the wilds in the autumn to make a web show and produce a book - http://unbound.co.uk/books/riddle-of-the-sands

This week, Lloyd (aka NotDavies) has disappeared on to the Continent, so Tim is sailing solo. Luckily, we recorded a couple of discussions before Lloyd left, interviewed an experienced ocean sailer at a club in London, and also received some gripping material from several Adventure Club members.

We discuss: the size of Carruthers’s luggage (00:34); the search for a Flensburg carpenter (03:50); Kass Schmitt tells us about the perils of a first visit to a ships chandlers and where it might take you (06:08); how to join the Riddle of the Sands Adventure Club (17:50); another visit to a pipe shop and BIG news about the supposedly mythical Raven Mixture (19:15)

the 15th #rotsadventure  podcast

At last our heroes Carruthers & Davies arrive at the East Frisian islands. It’s October 15, and, in a curious reversal of roles, Davies is quaffing pink gin in a bar, whilst Carruthers is dealing with intruders on the boat.

In this podcast you can learn why Wangerooge is rarely in the same place in any given century, how to mix a delicious pink gin (with proper German gin), and how the Frisians used dykes, drainage and ‘siels’ to build a nation – and create a stink.

As we enter a 10-day period of relative quiet in the Sands (story-wise) relating to October 6 - 15, we use the spare time to go to the movies. Thanks to Arthur Beale, we got to watch the 1978 film ...

http://timwright.typepad.com/main/2015/05/please-support-the-riddle-of-the-sands-adventure-club-on-unbound-we-cant-do-this-without-your-help.html

Our mission is to take the classic spy & sailing novel ‘The Riddle of the Sands’ out into the wilds of northern Germany and follow the route of the story as closely as possible from day to day. And when we get back, we want to publish a book about our adventures. But we can’t do the trip, or produce the month-long web show, or publish the book, without your support.

We need you to pledge to this project at http://unbound.co.uk/books/riddle-of-the-sands.

Join the Riddle of the Sands Adventure Club today: http://riddleofthesands.net/wordpress/how-to-join-in/

In this episode, we discover the addictive delights of pipe smoking, track down a place where we might all go and learn how to shoot, discuss the portability of Rippingille stoves and mourn the fate of Dresden  – and then, bathed in a nicotine haze, we cover a range of ‘Club Business’ items. From Hugh Childers setting us straight about his grandfather through to the near-universal love of Arthur Beale (although Aunt Liz prefers ‘The Welsh Harp’…?) and on to themed biscuits, membership badges, the sizing of rigging screws and the delightful offer of day’s small boat sailing in the Dengie peninsula. Surely you want to join the Club now.
