Remarkable story about co-operation between US and Russian scientists after "hints emerged that something extraordinarily dangerous had been left behind in a warren of underground tunnels".

Despite it all, I still love the Tour de France, and like to think that the flurry of dopers getting high places over the last 15 years is merely a squall that is at last blowing over

Scientists combined 10-years-worth of Hubble Space Telescope photos to create this resulting image that shows 5,500 individual galaxies, some of which are one ten-billionth the brightness of what our human eyes can see.

Nigerian 419 Phone Home

creative writing
He was stranded (at a space station) in 1990 when the Soviet Union was dissolved. … He is in good humor, but wants to come home.”

– The latest spin on the Nigerian email, as reported in Venture Beat, plays on your sympathy for an African astronaut stuck in space 22 years and your greed for a cut of his $15 million in accumulated paychecks.

The delight of flight

Lovely drone footage of Manhattan, New York.

I even like the way they've over-saturated the colours to make the taxi cabs pop.

Stunning skies, apart from the action below. What a summer! Do you often visit Chester-le-Street by chance?

Drone + GoPro + first-person perspective goggles = future shock

I didn't get to try these out but I'm awed by what's now possible on a consumer budget. They have a(n incredibly geeky and jargon-filled) shop: http://team-blacksheep.com/shop where $2k gets you a complete rig.

The future shock comes from the realisation that people who are worrying about police forces and drones are behind the curve. +Daniel Suarez's new book raises interesting questions about drones in the future but FPV is going to be bigger since it's more accessible and needs less infrastructure.

In short, William Gibson was right. The future is already here but it's not always where you're looking.
