One of my favorite community related talks this past year was +Ana Hevesi's Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: How We Can Borrow from Other Traditions and Level Up Our Game at CMX East in NYC. ( In her talk, Ana emphasized that there is no need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to building communities and pointed out five ingredients of a growing community looking at Alcoholics Anonymous, Burning Man, Linux and StackExchange as examples. Expanding even further on this concept, it's possible to research behavior patterns to predict how a community will interact so that you can proactively setup your community workflows and policies accordingly. How, you ask?

Join us for this week’s #CMGRHangout panel on Friday, December 18th at 2pm EST/11am PST to discuss how to identify and apply behavioral patterns that help to influence how to build strong communities.

+Dom Garrett and +Sherrie Rohde will be hosting the hangout with +Jono Bacon, +Randy Farmer, +Jennifer Sable Lopez and +Scott Moore as panelists. +Christin Kardos and +Carrie Keenan will be moderating the Twitter chat using #CMGRHangout .

Discussion Questions

1. What are good resources for someone who wants to start looking at behavior research?
2. How can you identify behavior patterns within your existing community?
3. Research shows people don't like uncertainty in their relationships. How can we build certainty into our communities?
4. Research shows bad behavior propagates when a dominant social group accepts it. How does this impact community policies?
5. How can we take research on habit formation and apply it to our community workflows?
6. What are other key behavior patterns we can study for building strong communities?

RSVP & Watch the Hangout

RSVP here to let us know you’re going to watch. This will add the event to your calendar and remind you to attend! If you want to be on air, please let us know in advance by commenting here.

Let’s discuss ways you can attend:

Watch: You do NOT need to join the hangout. Just stay on the Google+ Event and you’ll see the video on YouTube. (Don’t worry, it will be there and start playing as soon as the broadcast begins.)

Talk and Be Seen: If you decide you want to talk, not just watch, please let us know in advance. (We will only invite a few people for this event, so let us know why you would like to attend.)

Chat: You can watch here and/or follow the conversation on Twitter using #CMGRHangout .

If you join us on the hangout, a wired internet connection is preferred and if you have a headset with mic or earbuds, that works best for the audio. You will also need a working webcam.
This Hangout On Air is hosted by My Community Manager. The live video broadcast will begin soon.

Download your copy. I have mine ready to use.
Just downloaded my copy of +Seth Godin's Thanksgiving Reader, filled with passages and quotes on gratitude to read aloud with loved ones during the holiday. As Seth so beautifully puts it, "After all the travel and the cooking and the hassle, for these few minutes, perhaps we can all breathe the same air and think hard about what we’re thankful for." Visit to get yours.

Finally. A decent Mexican restaurant in the area! House margaritas are fantastic on the rocks. M-F from 2-6pm in BOGO on the house margaritas. Tuesday, they are $3.99 all day. Chips and salsa are consistently good. Ask for the hot salsa but be warned it's hot. We don't eat meat but have tried almost every vegetarian option and most of the seafood options. Haven't been disappointed with anything yet.

We can walk to it, which is nice. 😊 The produce selection is decent. We stay away from their seafood. Staff is very friendly.

A little outdated in the rooms, but you can't beat the grounds and views. All rooms are bungalows and you feel like you are in paradise with just about every step you take on the grounds. If you don't like walking (the property is spread out) you can call for a golf cart to get you and bring you where you need to go. Most of the time, you'll actually have people ask if you want a ride if they see you walking. Food and drinks are fantastic at the on site choices.

Service was not the fastest, but since we weren't in a hurry didn't mind. Quality of the food was good. We enjoyed the shrimp fajitas. Used a corn tortilla instead of flour, which I am used to, and also had mushrooms. Good flavor overall. The sangria was good, but not the best. Guacamole is made table side and very fresh. Would definitely return.
