A therapist  wrote online about depression in a very simple way which I thought was pretty accurate in a general sense. I edited the wording a bit:

"Generally how people get depressed is through a process called negative reinforcement. It usually starts with repetitive setbacks, such as losing a job, a significant other, family problems, financial issues, injuries, etc. The repetitive setbacks give the person the impression that they are not in control over their life and they start to decrease their activities in order to regain control over their life.

For example, they will stay at home more, perhaps stop exercising, cleaning, eating right, and create a more stable environment, perhaps just watching TV all day.

This is a short term solution to create a cocoon where they are in control again. When your activities are severely limited, such as only watching TV all day, nothing in your life can go wrong anymore.

The problem with this, and this is where negative reinforcement comes in, is that when they don't do much during the day they feel no reason to change their thinking patterns. Since what they think about creates the emotions they have in their body, eventually they will get depressed where they feel numb or feel as though they feel nothing at all.

The solution is to bring in positive reinforcement, where the person reintroduces the activities they did when they felt better, or pick up new ones. The key here is to not be controlled by emotions. the mind is split into the conscious and unconscious. The unconscious mind will drive a person to continue watching TV all day because it is "safe" and controlled. The conscious mind needs to make a choice to get out and do things regardless, with the expectation that a person's state will change if they do."

Note that this summarizes the action component, separate from the medication component, prescribed by a doctor to help treat severe depressive disorder, chronic depression and chemical imbalances.

Saw this posted near my place in #barrhaven  - Someone lost their kitty named Haole (Hao-Lee), May 4 near Selhurst and Furness, may be in a garage, shed, or under a deck. Poly-dactyl, white spot on chest and groin area, might be very skittish when afraid. 613-296-6521

“Our culture has accepted two huge lies. The first is that if you disagree with someone’s lifestyle, you must fear or hate them. The second is that to love someone means you agree with everything they believe or do. Both are nonsense. You don’t have to compromise convictions to be compassionate.” -Rick Warren

I really need to remember that dealing with a rude or angry person does not work by responding to them in a rude or angry way. I had some words with someone who road raged at me today, and I really should have just ignored the person completely.

An interesting idea, especially for parents - coat hooks on the wall near the floor for shoes?
