Once again the FESA ( +DFESWesternAustralia ) web site can't handle the load.  There is a lot of smoke around this morning in Perth and their site has been unresponsive since 7:00 am.  Surely such an important  site should be capable of dealing with the load. (And use twitter to follow them isn't a sufficient alternative).  This happened last time there was a fire in the Swan Valley.  They really should lift their game.

Ahhh - my desk.  Actually it always looks like this ;-)  The box in the middle is my filter level monitor and controller ( #arduino   #freetronics     based) .  I have been using a Milone liquid level sensors to monitor water level in our filter for the last few years. Unfortunately these only seem to last about 9 - 12 months outdoors in the elements.  I have gone through 2 of these, and recently purchased a third which was DOA.  So now I am trying a Maxbotix MB7389 Ultrasonic Sensor in an outdoor enclosure.  This is supposed to have a resolution of 1mm between 30cm and 5m.

It's been raining and the Ghost Moths have started emerging from underground. The motorbike frogs are out and about getting a snack or two ;-)

Our most recent new visitor, a White-necked Heron (Ardea pacifica). Much bigger and bulkier than the White-faced Heron, and no doubt could do a lot more damage.

What a smorgasbord you offer Tim!

The #atmega 1284p based Goldilocks  http://tronixstuff.com/2013/08/28/review-goldilocks-arduino-compatible-atmega1284p/ looks like a  pretty sweet #Arduino   Uni  compatible board. I have been using #Freetronics Eleven in my projects when I need more real estate than the #JeeNodes provide with an #rfm12b board from #jeelabs  for my 915mhz sensor network.  But this is a step up and much easier to use the prototyping space.

A Golden Orb Weaver in our back yard. The web actually spans about 8 meters, with the spider smack in the middle.

Story
Introduction
I have been writing software since I was about 15 (Umm that was in 1980 ;-)

I worked for Sun during the 90's.  (Worked for them twice in that decade)

I have been designing and building solutions for the web before most people even knew what the web was. I started building my first commercial web application in late 1994.  It was in Perl and C and was a web front end to a CICS/COBOL application running on an IBM mainframe. It ran on Sun gear, and communicated with the COBOL app over appc connecting over LU6.2 on token ring.  I developed a template language, and data dictionary (by parsing the cobol source code) to describe the data coming from the mainframe.  It went live early 1995 and was still running up to 2005.

I discovered zope and python in 2000. Did an awful lot of stuff with it. Since 2001 I have been independently consulting/contracting in IT.  Since 2008 most of my work has been focussed on Google's Appengine platform.

I have done heaps of other stuff, from IT manager, performance tuning, all sorts of stuff. Just can't be bothered writing about it ;-)

Since 2006 we have also been building our own business, Swan Valley Fish and Lily Farm.   That has been a serious amount of work.  The business is running well, but now it's time for me re-enter the IT industry.
