"And why do the best hackers on the planet not work for the FBI? Because the FBI will not hire anyone with a 24-inch purple mohawk, 10-gauge ear piercings, and a tattooed face who demands to smoke weed while working and won't work for less than a half-million dollars a year. But you bet your ass that the Chinese and Russians are hiring similar people with similar demands and have been for many years. It's why we are decades behind in the cyber race."

"...former drone-system technical sergeant Lisa shares a letter of commendation she received for having helped to identify 121,000 insurgent targets over a two-year period, suggesting that viewers “do the math” to estimate how many fatalities there have been since American declared war on Afghanistan in 2001. Lisa actually feels so conflicted about her involvement that she joins a neighbor on her annual trip to Afghanistan, setting out to meet the civilian survivors of misdirected strikes.

These sequences, which put a human face on those who were lucky enough to walk away (often on prosthetic legs, as provided by a hospital she visits), drive home the danger of a world in which drones are allowed. “National Bird” cites examples of ordinary Afghans bombed at funerals, weddings and religious ceremonies, even going so far as to show footage of one mistargeted family bringing home the corpses of 23 relatives.

“It’s like borders don’t matter anymore,” observes Lisa, who was part of an operation to suck up and process personal data in order to identify individuals who could then be blasted out of the clear blue sky. If the U.S. can justify the use of drones in Afghanistan, the film implies, on what authority can we forbid other countries from doing the same to us?"

So disappointed in the decline of #Sandpoint over the past few years, particularly this contrived shite (A.K.A. "art") popping up all over downtown. These narcissistic grant-writing statists wouldn't know art if it brutally raped them in a dark alley.

This used to be such a nice town... :-(

If someone just combined the girlfriend pillow and the tissue-dispensing pillow, they could totally corner the market.

"FDR said in this first State of the Union speech, implausibly, in the midst of massive death by conscription and material privation of war: “I am proud to say to you that the spirit of the American people was never higher than it is today — the Union was never more closely knit together — this country was never more deeply determined to face the solemn tasks before it.”

What Is this “Vision“ stuff?

Just look at those words. Are we really being asked to believe that the American people as a whole have a spirit, and that the president is somehow magically ordained to know its height? That he knows all previous collective spirits in American history and can know for sure, based on his omniscient measuring skills, that it has never been higher? And can a country really be “determined” in the sense that it has a unified will, no different from an individual will, and it acts in history as an aggregate?

There is nothing about this sense that embodies the idea of freedom. “The American spirit” — or the spirit of any people — is not a singular entity but a social order in which millions and billions of individuals have rights and shape their own lives in cooperation with others based on their peaceful choices."

"Totalitarian science lets you know you’re living in a totalitarian society.

The government, the press, the mega-corporations, the prestigious foundations, the academic institutions, the “humanitarian” organizations say:

“This is the disease. This is its name. This is what causes it. This is the drug that treats it. This is the vaccine that prevents it.”

“This is how accurate diagnosis is done. These are the tests. These are the possible results and what they mean.”

“Here are the genes. This is what they do. This is how they can be changed and substituted and manipulated. These are the outcomes.”

“These are the data and the statistics. They are correct. There can be no argument about them.”

“This is life. These are the components of life. All change and improvement result from our management of the components.”

“This is the path. It is governed by truth which our science reveals. Walk the path. We will inform you when you stray. We will report new improvements.”

“This is the end. You can go no farther. You must give up the ghost. We will remember you.”"

" so far as society itself is composed of de-individualized persons, it is completely at the mercy of ruthless individualists. Let it band together into groups and organizations as much as it likes – it is just this banding together and the resultant extinction of the individual personality that makes it succumb so readily to a dictator. A million zeroes joined together do not, unfortunately, add up to one." –Carl Gustav Jung, "The Undiscovered Self"
