A Lake Erie algae bloom fueled by farm and wastewater treatment runoff left the entire city of Toledo—nearly 500,000 residents—without drinking water a few weeks ago. The Alliance for the Great Lakes sprung into action, educating residents, providing recommendations, and working to enact legislation that will prevent future problems in Lake Erie and the Great Lakes overall.
