THE NEBRASKA CHILDREN AND FAMILIES CRISIS RESPONSE PROGRAM

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services has launched a new program to help families navigate the behavioral health system.

The children and families crisis response program was announced Monday. The initiative aims to connect families with a mental health professional, either at home or via telehealth, within an hour of calling for help.

In most cases, a therapist answering the call would help families work through their concerns over the phone. But a therapist could go to the family's home and talk with all family members to de-escalate the situation, figure out a safety plan and refer them to other resources.

LB225, sponsored by Bellevue Sen. Sue Crawford, extends an alternative response pilot program and authorizes it to be used statewide.

Alternative response allows the state Department of Health and Human Services to provide services to families that meet certain screening requirements and are the subject of a child abuse or neglect investigation where the risk to the child is considered minimal.

NEBRASKA- In every case filed in juvenile court, a youth can be removed from their home. Despite this, in 2016, there were over 2,000 cases where a youth did not have a lawyer to help them through their case. Youths sitting alone in the courtroom feel extremely isolated and confused. An attorney ensures that a youth’s voice is heard, and it has a positive impact on the youth’s development.

As parents, teachers and caregivers, we all want to raise resilient kids — to develop their strength so they can overcome obstacles big and small. Resilience leads to better health, greater happiness and more success. The good news is that resilience isn’t a fixed personality trait; we’re not born with a set amount of it. Resilience is a muscle we can help kids build.
