I feel like while there is a lack of data researchers/scientists there's also a lack of value placed in those positions by companies (from my limited experience). It also seems like a large amount of progress can be made using rudimentary data analysis which can be done by reliable data analysts or even engineers. Again, the value therein is a difficult sell.
