A great piece from my colleague +Tom Kaneshige
In an industry where buzzwords fly, terms like ‘team player,’ ‘salesmanship,’ ‘innovative’ and ‘thought leadership’ are hardly benign. In fact, they are sometimes code words that mask bias and sexual discrimination.

This is an exciting development in that it not only includes vendors and systems integrators, but end users as well.
A group of Hadoop and big data application vendors, system integrators and end-users are forming the Open Data Platform association to create a common core big data kernel to eliminate fragmentation in the space.

Excellent story from my colleague +Tom Kaneshige.
Silicon Valley is the land of entrepreneurial spirit and the home of the startup – that is, unless you’re women-led business looking for venture capital.

People do write about R (I've touched on it on occasion) but it's a pretty specialized tool for now. Still, it pays to keep an eye on Revolution Analytics, though it is open core rather than open source.

And yes about art. It's what makes true data scientists a very rare breed. It's not enough to be a statistical wizard. You need the creativity of an artist to present data in a visual way that is intuitive for the users. Storytelling, visualization, interpretation...all key data science skills.

Pivotal is releasing its data lake architecture components, including Greenplum DB, GemFire and HAWQ, to the open source community.

I think this is another sign of how serious customers are these days about avoiding vendor lock-in. Pivotal's Madra told me that the open source question is part of every customer engagement now.

U.K. food wholesaler JJ Food Service felt like it lost personal contact with its customers as its ecommerce portal gained traction as its primary sales channel. Sales agents could no longer anticipate customer needs or tell them about new offerings.

Now, with a combination of data, machine learning and predictive analytics, JJ Food Service is bringing back the personal touch.

Wholesaler JJ Food Service's ecommerce portal left it a little disconnected from its customers, so it's using its data and Azure-based machine learning to bring back the personal touch.
