It's your birthday... Thought you should know.
Said customer pays bulk fees for modems and service, terminate all the cable modem sessions to their own infrastructure, provide whatever they want atop it, and then sell it out at a higher cost. All modem sessions terminate to them on a n-by gig service internally via business services. Cox hops-to when they yell at them, as well.
I thought about doing this just to a) get good customer service response time and b) control the fate so to speak, getting a group-buy collective of friends together to do so with a large enough user-base they would sell to us for private service to the modem. Downside is need to buy like an n-by per/mb private circuit to terminate those sessions, and internet service as well. This provides a private neighbor-net service that people can opt-into among each other.
I think it might be awesome to control my access between a buddy and myself in the neighborhood, or city, just simply having access to a system to provision the rules to do so direct to my internal network, and aggregate the nat out the rest of the world.
I have redundant power at my house, 1/10g aggregation, and do network services for a living, let me know who's down. Sort of like a collective bargaining arrangement.
Honestly, yes fiber==better, but it's still very async by nature to deal with passive-optical networks to make cost per port ageeable, and coax can scale easily to well over a gig as it is. Between better phy modulation rates now, and having a provider that gives a flying shit to make sure your plant is clean, I really never have an issue with Cox.
Disclaimer, I worked at @home networks at the start of the cable modem industry, and obviously cox prior, but now I just want my internet to work from them. :)
