Lens Blur in the new Google Camera app

One of the biggest advantages of SLR cameras (http://goo.gl/XeAhti) over camera phones is the ability to achieve shallow depth of field effects (also known as bokeh, http://goo.gl/xHR774), which makes the object of interest "pop" by bringing the foreground into focus and de-emphasizing the background. 

Achieving this optical effect has traditionally required a big lens and aperture, and therefore hasn’t been possible using the camera on your mobile phone or tablet. That all changes with Lens Blur, a new mode in the Google Camera app (http://goo.gl/UpMubk). 

Lens Blur  replaces the need for a large optical system with computer vision algorithms and optimization techniques that are run entirely on the mobile device, simulating a larger lens and aperture in order to creating a 3D model of the world.

+Vasant Marur I had never seen this building from this angle. MIT is a photographer's "must shoot" when it comes to architecture. Then again so is a lot of Boston. I'll have to check it out next time I go by there. Thanks!

Introduction
Sometimes I like to think of myself as a photography factory. I see my photographs mostly as raw material for projects that might be worked on at some point later on in life.

We all have but a short time on this earth. As slow as time can be it is also fast, swift, furious and mighty and then it’s over. Jack Kerouac is dead. Andy Warhol is dead. Garry Winogrand is dead. Lee Friedlander, Stephen Shore and William Eggleston are not dead yet, but probably will be at some point. Charles Bukowski once said that endurance was more important than truth. Charles Bukowski's now dead.

When I'm not taking or processing the pictures I'm mostly thinking about the pictures. I'm trying to publish a library of 1,000,000 finished, processed photographs before I die.

The absurdity of my obsessive compulsive view on photography is not lost on me. But it is the absurdity of life that I find most beautiful of all. Where Sisyphus had his stone I have my camera and a bag full of lenses.

Document, explore, lather, rinse, repeat. Photography for me then becomes a kind of hyperactivity, loosely arranged and presented. My work is less about individual images and instead more about the power of a massive amount of excessive and disjointed images where stories, characters and places sometimes stay and other times reappear or disappear entirely for no good reason at all.

Understated in it's small Mission Street home, everything about this restaurant was fantastic. Excellent sake and Sapporo on draft. Favorites were the snapper, yellowtail, tako, and mostly everything the chef recommended. Was not as much of a fan of the hot food, which is probably harder to prepare there because they don't have a full kitchen. Definitely recommend going omakase and sitting at the sushi bar. One of the best, if not the best, sushi bar in San Francisco.

This is a very good place to get sushi. My wife and I eat here a lot. It's reasonably priced and they have parking which is often tight on Piedmont Ave. We like to sit at the sushi bar and can usually get a seat there without a reservation. The sushi is high quality and they have a lot of different and unique rolls. They have a frequent dinner program where they will stamp your card. double stamps I think on Tuesdays. If you spend $200 there over time they will give you $10 off your next meal. Friendly people and a nice place to hang out.

The food here is mind blowing. Southern inspired/flavored everything. The fried chicken is mind blowing. Best fried chicken I've had in the SF Bay Area. Also open for brunch. Be sure and get the Falls Mills cheesy grits if they are serving them. My favorite place to sit is at the bar where you can enjoy your dinner sitting next to your date and have the bartender tell you all the best things to try and enjoy there. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in the SF Bay Area. Go for brunch as well and order the fried chicken eggs benedict!

What an amazing culinary experience. It's a bit pricey and a little fancy, but the best food in the East Bay. Everything about this restaurant is superb. There is only one menu, what they are serving that day, but don't worry about that. Everything on their tasting menu will be intensely perfect. The evening my wife and I went it was $75 per person for the menu. There was an optional wine pairing for $45 each. I think corkage on our own bottle of wine was $30 or so. If you go *definitely* ask to get seats at the Chef's table. It seats 8 and you get to watch everything being prepared for the evening making an even more enjoyable and fun experience. As a plus you get to sit next to your date at the counter which I've always felt is more intimate. The restaurant is very small. It can't hold more than probably 40 to 50 dinners and for that many dinners they had 10 staff. The ratio between chefs/service staff and guests is very high and you should expect the highest quality of service you can imagine here. The sommelier especially spends time with you over every wine pour explaining what is special about the wine, why it was chosen and how he feels it complements the food. A fun, enjoyable and educational aspect to the evening. At the end of our evening they gave us a print out of the menu to take home with us which was a nice touch as well. The decor at the restaurant is very modern chic. It's easy to miss from the outside with it's plain white exterior. The decor is not meant to get in the way of the real superstar, the food! The evening we went there were nine courses counting the cheese/dessert course at the end. My favorites were the albacore tuna with lemon and red perilla and their well known specialty poached farm eggy yoke with alliums, smoked dates and malt pinot grigio. EVERY SINGLE COURSE though was FANTASTIC! I've dined at many of the great restaurants in the City, Gary Danko, Fleur de Lys, the Ritz Carlton Dining Room, Benu, and I prefer Commis over all of them. It's so wonderful to have such a remarkable restaurant in the East Bay.

A charming quaint local Oakland spot with wonderful food. We sat at the bar and ordered what the bartender recommended which included beer steamed clams, kanpachi sashimi, and the duck liver pate and opted for the fried chicken for dinner. All were quite good and wonderfully prepared. The service was attentive and good. The decor is that of a friendly neighborhood bistro. I called a half an hour before we arrived asking if there was availability at the bar. We had to wait about five minutes when we got there but then a spot cleared up for us. It's nice that they have a few chairs outside and it's a pleasant place to wait and take in the city on a warm night. We will definitely be back.

Some of the best sandwiches in the SF Bay area. The fried chicken sandwich is amazing, the coleslaw that goes on it and the spicy dressing is just perfect. I also had some really amazing strawberry shortcake there as well. The only downside is that the lines for these sandwichs and limited hours of the bakery make them very difficult to get if you hate waiting. They are open noon-1:30pm Tue-Sat.

Large, delicious, customized salads. There is always a line out the door of this place for a reason. The line moves pretty quickly and the key is to get there before 11:30am for lunch. Build your own salad is $8 or so and includes bread -- $3.50 of that is for your toppings. You choose three specialty items like bacon, blue cheese, avocado, hearts of palm, beets, tons of other things for $1 each (of your $3.50) or staples which are 50 cents each (like edamame, chick peas, etc.). You can mix and match however you want and pick a dressing to go on your salad. They mix the salad well right there in front of you in a bowl and pour it into a bowl to eat there or a sturdy plastic container to take to go. The restaurant is spacious and attractively designed with large high ceilings and an open food prep area where you watch everything made in front of your own eyes. They have water available to help yourself to with cucumbers inside giving it a spa like flavor. One of my favorite places to grab a salad quickly downtown.
