Did you see this announcement by Commonwealth bank? They´ve just entered the mobile payments market. Normally, this would be average news. However this case is really interesting.

The technology:
- can access payments via the new technology - including contactless cards
- scan barcodes, discount coupons, loyalty cards and even QR codes
- can allow people to do banking via facebook
- allows people to create apps based around it.

You can also get a payment device attached to an iphone.

This is really fascinating. Most of the existing technology has focused on one facet. Heck, most companies would have just leveraged existing technology. By developing it in-house, they´ve given themselves a massive heads up over the competition. This can really help small retailers, especially when they aren´t at their normal retail location.

It was also interesting to note this line ¨The move forms part of its efforts build up information about its customer base through the payments system.¨

What do you think? I believe that this is an exciting time as a consumer :)

There is so much social media news to cover that I thought I´d provide a daily summary to make it easier for you to follow. ^Jade

Foursquare will be big in Britain says chief: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/news/9175401/Foursquare-will-be-big-in-Britain-says-chief.html
This post makes me wonder if Foursquare will become big here. I know it´s popular in some communities, but I´ve found the ´normal´ people tend to gravitate towards Facebook places.

Cool post by Think Tank Social about splitting your pics for extra clicks. http://www.thinktanksocial.com.au/2012/05/split-your-facebook-pics-for-extra-clicks/ I´m not sure it leads to conversions to your social goals, but it definite shows your fans that you are savvy.

How and Why I Use LinkedIn Groups to Build My Business: http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/2a2btq/www.ducttapemarketing.com/blog/2012/05/21/how-and-why-i-use-linkedin-groups-to-build-my-business/ ´A study conducted by Hubspot earlier this year suggested that LinkedIn is “277 Percent More Effective for Lead Generation than Facebook and Twitter.”´ I rarely think about LinkedIn for b2b, although I have head people talk about leaving due to spam.

On that note, Chris Brogan posted about why he closed his LinkedIn account: http://www.chrisbrogan.com/i-closed-my-linkedin-account/ I did the same a while ago - I´ve found it isn´t as effective in my community.

A family business put his business on FB and had little traction: http://www.thejournal.ie/readme/column-i-put-my-family-business-on-facebook-here’s-what-happened/ . I think it´s because of his niche and his engagement, but it´s a fascinating post regardless. Kudos to him for experimenting

Welsh Village Covers Itself in QR Codes, Linked to Wikipedia, in Tourism Effort: http://www.adweek.com/adfreak/welsh-village-covers-itself-qr-codes-linked-wikipedia-tourism-effort-140681 This is more mobile then social, but it led to us creating a new Pinterest board: http://pinterest.com/thevillage/nifty-qr-codes/

Microsoft has launched a new social network, So.cl: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/microsofts-new-social-network-socl-its-like-google-for-wonks.php The team at Read Write Web reckon that it´s not going to go mainstream. We aren´t that impressed.

@hellobenteoh tweeted: ¨On milestones, World Vision Australia have added milestones all the way back to 1950!¨ Now THAT is how you use timeline :-)

Etsy opens Melbourne showroom as part of its Australian push: 5 things you didn't know about the online marketplace: http://www.smartcompany.com.au/retail/049744-etsy-opens-melbourne-showroom-as-part-of-its-australian-push-5-things-you-didn-t-know-about-the-online-marketplace.html

That´s all for today :) Hopefully these updates will allow us to focus more on creative and branding on our twitter account

What news piqued your interest?
Dennis Crowley, the co-founder and chief executive of Foursquare, a location-sharing social network, says the service will be as big in the UK as it is US this time next year.

Interesting post showing that ´Pinterest Users Look But Don't Buy:´ http://www.forbes.com/sites/jjcolao/2012/07/13/new-data-shows-pinterest-users-look-but-dont-buy/ We´ve done a lot of work advising online retailers how to use Pinterest so reading the results of this study initially concerned us.

I think this study is more realistic in that it shows what happens when people jump on a new platform without experience or a strategy. Conversions will be low in many niches. Trust us, we´ve seen so many embarassing brand Pinterest accounts. This is one of the reasons we recommend that people set up a personal account first and research the competition. If you look at the research, some brands waiting a year before making a move. Some brands are still monitoring.

What do you think? Does this data reflect your experience?

Chief Villager Justine has been incredibly busy getting her presentation ready for the PeSA internet conference. She´s speaking about Pinterest, so we created a couple of resources to help people understand Pinterest and thought we´d share them with you.

http://pinterest.com/thevillage/interest-graph-and-pinterest/ We saw a really funky example of the Wall Street Journal providing a tutorial via Pinterest and thought we´d try the same thing. Our board talks about the interest graph and why it is so important.

http://www.slideshare.net/thevillageagency/the-10-commandments-of-pinterest We also created a quick slideshare called the 10 Commandments of Pinterest. The goal was to provide people with inspiration about how they can use the platform.

Would love to know what you think about both of these. Is there anything else you´d like us to do? ^Jade
There has been a lot of buzz and conversation online about how the interest graph will supersede the social graph – and how Pinterest is on the forefront of that change. google.com · Repin Like Commen...

We're stoked for our client +miishka who was not only mentioned by the Facebook team at the +Social Media Club Melbourne event last night - she has been profiled as an amazing case study on "best practice" for leveraging the power of Facebook to build fans, loyalty and sales.
From all of The Villagers, a big congrats to Miishka, a major credit to you and your business partners. (We can't wait to launch the work we've been doing with you in the next couple of weeks!) http://awe.sm/5t56c ^Jus

Just discovered this fantastic post and it´s gotten me thinking about interactive advertisements.

I tend to ignore many static advertisements. I´m busy - the main ones that stick are the Melbourne tram ones. But I love the interactive ones. Even if I´m not interested in the brand, they always make me smile.

We´ve started collecting some clever examples on a dedicated Pinterest board. http://pinterest.com/thevillage/interactive-advertisements/.

We also love it when the Aussies are innovating in this space. Look at what Headspace are doing: http://yfrog.com/0hag2ej . The associated tweet said ¨Big problems start small - check out our new bus/tram stop campaign with Adshel in which glass cracks will expand¨

Headspace have been doing a fantastic job with their marketing and advertising.

Have any interactive ads gotten your attention lately?

^Jade

(Note that my views on ads are that of a 25 year old who reads so much about advertising that she is blind to them. I am not a normal person :) )
