My current column in Signs of The Times magazine is all about the requirement to keep learning. Today while I work, I'm listening to interviews with other artists who inspire me. It's such a challenge to find time for all things that I want to do, but regardless of how busy I am I squeeze in time for learning and inspiration.

I've been teaching myself Adobe Edge animate and reflow over the past couple of weeks. They have quickly become a powerful tool in my arsenal, bridging the gap between me the Graphics guy and the full stack programmer I'm working with. I learn so much with online resources but what is missing is an online tutor. I don't always need a lesson, some times just a answer to a question like: where Is "____" or what is "___" called in this software. I'll often have to skip through up to 5 min of blah blah blah on both you tube and other* just to get an answer that was 30 sec of video top. I love that my company bought a subscription to Lynda, I find it incredibly useful to play lessons at 2x the speed. It still would be cool to have little 10-15 secs clips that are like "find this: here".

Last night in my Digital Darkroom class a student asked if I was going to teach them how to ‘Dodge and Burn’. I said that I had already taught them that technique using masked adjustment layers. I was happy to teach them the actual dodge and burn tools too, and explain why I don’t like them. Then I asked the class how many of them had spent time in an old fashion darkroom, dodging and burning prints. A third of them raised their hand. They knew what dodge and burn meant, and recognized the meaning of the tool icons. The rest of the class didn’t. To them it was like speaking a foreign language. Photoshop and Lightroom are full of terms that were borrowed from film days, but those terms are making sense to fewer and fewer photographers. I wonder if the legacy terms will stay with us indefinitely or eventually go away because they don’t make sense any more.

I'm so glad I got to be a part of this. Yes please, let's do it again downtown +Trey Ratcliff .

LA Highlight Video! Thanks again everyone — that was a great group! I thoroughly enjoyed all of it and meeting so many… let’s do it again sometime… maybe next time in downtown??

This is a detail of a well worn, well loved, well played Telecaster.

I spent last Saturday shooting stills on the set of a 48 Hour Film Project production. I took over 1200 photos. These are 25 of my favorites from the day.

Thanks +Peter Tellone. It was a grueling long day in the hot sun, but worth it.

I usually prefer making color images, and I almost never do street photography. This is a rare image of mine that I really like. Every time I see one of +martin u waltz images I think of this one. I started following martin a short while ago when I joined the +The Arcanum as a master. Martin is also a master. Even though his work is completely different than mine, I am totally inspired by him. I think this sums up what The Arcanum is all about. We draw inspiration from each other, and we need each other to grow as artists. #arcanum #streetphotography #blackandwhite

I had a great time Saturday night in Santa Monica for +Trey Ratcliff's LA photo walk. I spent most of the time talking with people and making new friends, so there wasn't much time to take good photos. I made this one from a bunch of brackets I fired off while standing there talking. I think it sums up the experience for me. I'd love to see what the guy on the right was photographing. #TreyUSALA #TreyUSA #SantaMonica

I've joined The Arcanum as a master and am now actively looking for apprentices. The Arcanum is a new learning platform that pairs you with like minded creative people. You learn and grow together at your own pace, in a safe, sharing community. Check it out, and mention me by name if you sign up.

This interview will give you a good idea of who I am, and what kind of art I create. I'm looking for apprentices to share the joy of making images in any style or medium. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu9XKAmGne8

Reunion Tour - I photographed this collection of guitars for a friend of a friend. Can you spot the most valuable one?

This image was pieced together from many frames, shot with varied light. That was the only way I could control the reflections. The room was small, and I don't have much lighting equipment. I also used a variety of processing techniques for texture and light, because that's what I enjoy doing most.
