Sijo is a form of poetry from Korea that fits with my journey. For me, Sijo is a soulful play on words that summons both essence and existence.

Sijo is a poetics of completeness in the untamed reality of life, and it joins deep reflection with action: meaning and action unfold as one.

Sijo poems are three lines of some 45 syllables in total. The last line pivots into action instead of remaining in the state of contemplation.

In kindergarten, they teach you that you have five senses: sight, sound, smell, taste and touch.

But to solve the problem of mind-body dualism for you, existential philosophy would have it that your mind is subservient to your body and is a background projection of it. Your brain has a sense—your Self or consciousness. Your belief systems, your values and the person you call “I” are all instances of your brain sensing the world.

Adult: So what is it that grown-ups do to make children feel bad?

Child: Smack them, shout at them, and make them sit on the naughty step, or make them do something else that they don’t like.

Anything else?

Oh yes, and tell them that they’re naughty, over and over again.

All because grown-ups believe in naughty.

So what’s it going to be like when there’s no such thing as naughty?

Grown-ups won’t interpret children’s behaviour as naughty anymore.

"...trending...flat abs...sale...sugar...Like...selfie...hourly celebrity updates...spend...cute puppy video...buy car..."

These words float in a speech bubble above a female alien with a large chest and lips who's holding a cell phone. She also has blonde hair, manicured nails and tattoos, and is wearing platform shoes and a skimpy pink Spandex outfit. Beside her on the ground sit three pieces of trash and a cigarette that hasn't quite gone out.

I'm in Bangkok, Thailand—during the time of so much human turmoil around the world. Natural disasters and man-made disasters and mass hysteria—floods in Japan, children in cages, Syria, volcanoes, plane crashes.

And there’s the craziness with real emotion—joy, tears, despair, hatred, hooliganism at the horrendously expensive entertainment of the FIFA World Cup in Russia. We pay to gain ... humiliation, degradation, disdain and debt.

Did you ever keep a diary as a child? If so, you can probably recall how freeing it was to share your thoughts about your day, write about your dream jobs and make lists of things you loved.

Turns out, journalling is therapeutic. It’s also a mindful activity you can fit into a busy schedule.

Some people use journals for gratitude, while others use them for goal-setting or to vent.

These days, there's lots of talk about healthy living. We're no longer in the era of the TV series Mad Men, when people chain-smoked three or four packs of cigarettes a day. Now it's all about daily exercise and a healthy diet. This is a hopeful shift in the thought process of those who wish to move away from heart disease and obesity.

Yet, one aspect of ourselves that still gets neglected is mental health.

The contemplative ‘only one with God’ friar monk, with tattoos and a sharpened cold steel U.S. Marine Corps Ka-Bar fighting knife in his cloister cell, was waiting to speak with his Superior.

The young friar had already put in some hard time while contemplating his existence as a member of a ‘band of brothers’. This time, he'd been adopted by another group of brothers, except these brothers in the ancient Roman Catholic religious order wore robes instead of camouflage fatigues.
