The wind is picking up in Whitianga. Metservice has issued a Strong Wind Watch for the Coromandel for a period of six hours from 1:00pm to 7:00pm today. Please spare a though for the central parts of New Zealand as they're bracing for Cyclone Gita.

A Navy Seasprite helicopter, carrying Commodore Jim Gilmour (commander of all the Royal New Zealand Navy ships), has just landed in Whitianga. As a pilot, Commodore Gilmour wasn't just a passenger on board the helicopter, he flew it to Whitianga himself. The helicopter has landed on the Northern Reclamation (next to the Whitianga Marina) and will be open for the public to visit from 3:30pm to 5:30pm today.

The maiden flight today of the third aeroplane (registered ZK-EAA) built by Mercury Bay Area School students. She took off beautifully and landed gracefully. Another stunning achievement by, shall we say, "Mercury Bay Aero School."

This has to be one of the biggest achievements in the Mercury Bay community for quite some time (if not ever). Te Rerenga resident, Andy Corles (left a tertraplegic after an accident in 2014) crossing the finish line in in the K2 Nicholas Browne Challenge (this year between Tairua and Whitianga) on his hand cycle a short while ago. Behind Andy are 50 very tough kilometres, including the massive Pumpkin Hill. Well done Andy! We're all immensely proud of you!
