A recent amendment to the #NewYorkCityHumanRightsLaw now requires employers to handle employee requests for reasonable accommodations in a specific manner. The amendment requires employers to participate in a cooperative discussion with an employee who needs accommodations for religious purposes, disability, pregnancy, and domestic violence, stalking, or a sex offense.

The #FamilyandMedicalLeaveAct (FMLA) gives qualifying employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave per year. It allows employees to take a reasonable amount of #unpaidleave time for medical or family reasons like the birth of a child, adoption or foster care, caring for a loved one with a serious medical condition, or taking medical leave for a serious health condition.

Under New York City’s #PaidSickLeaveLaw (PSLL), any employer with 5+ employees must provide paid sick leave, while those with four or less employees are required to only provide sick leave. Every year, an employer must provide his or her employees with up to forty hours of sick leave time. This means that an employee must accrue at least one hour of sick leave for every thirty hours that he or she has worked.

The Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) was created to protect women from #workplacediscrimination due to her pregnancy. A company is not allowed to fire a person, change her daily job description or deny her benefits due to their #pregnancy.

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law which structures the gradual increase of the #minimumwage in New York to $15.00. This structure provides a different schedule in three different regions of New York including, New York City; #Nassau, #Suffolk, and #Westchester counties; and outside Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties.

Across the country, more #employers are hiring individuals on an as-needed basis. This often leads to denying #workersbenefits such as health insurance, overtime, and sick pay, among others. However, hiring employees on an as-needed basis may be a violation of the #FairLaborStandardsAct (FLSA).
