4 Effective Ways of Managing Tantrums

Temper tantrums are very common among children from ages 1 to 4 years old; it is sometimes interpreted as an act of manipulation. But according to child psychologists, meltdowns usually occur out of anger and frustration when young children are unable to express what they want and need, or when parents do not comply with their desires. Manifestations may include a combination of crying, screaming, kicking, falling down, and much more.

The Academy Childcare and Preschool shares these helpful tips on how to deal with preschoolers having tantrum episodes.

1. Stay calm
During a tantrum, emotions take over and children are unable to listen. Responding negatively by yelling and hitting at them will only make the situation worse. Instead, comfort them so that it may influence them to be calm too.

2.Identify the triggers
Managing the tantrum depends on what triggers it; your child might need a nap, snack or a diaper change. Identifying these causes can help prevent from future outbursts.

3. Provide diversion
Young children usually have a short attention span. Giving them toys to play can help distract them from their emotional meltdown.

4.Talk it through
Ask them what is wrong and give a clear explanation. This will make them understand and realize that throwing a tantrum will not lead to getting what they want.

Tantrums should be dealt with differently depending on what causes it. Applying these easy and helpful tips might save you from stress in managing difficult child behaviors.
