The MyTouch line used to be so much more, The last great one being the 4G/Slide (Glacier/Doubleshot). Kind of sad to see T-mobile's branded phone taking a step back to entry level.

A quick check of AT&T Wireless shows about 24 smartphones (Android, Windows Phone, and even iPhone) under $50. So, entry level smartphones have been around for a long time.
 
Not only does it have sense but its been tweaked by T-Mobile to include there changes and bloat
