Thanks so much for staying with us Andy! Glad you enjoyed the rice bed. These 4 post beds called rice beds got their name from the rice carving on the posts. They were primarily designed to allow for better air circulation during hot summers. Before air conditioning, beds were moved to the center of the room during hot weather for cooler sleep. Mosquito netting was also used if necessary. In winter, beds could be “dressed”—draped with a canopy above and bed skirts below—for warmth. Thankfully, we have air conditioning and central heating, so none of the moving around is required anymore. And the step to get up into the bed is for our guests’ convenience just so you don’t have to take a flying leap to get up there!
