On the #Business Show radio programme this week, Aisling was discussing with Ronan Berry the importance of #technology (and video in particular) for democratizing access to information for all. One of the things she mentioned was adding captions to videos. This is sometimes referred to as an #SRT file. So what is it and how do you add an SRT file to a #video? As she mentioned on the show, video is really where it’s at currently. We are all using videos to educate ourselves, learning new skills at warp speed, or just to entertain ourselves. As the consumer becomes an avid content creator and curator, it’s becoming essential that business owners develop the skills to be able to create engaging content that is accessible by all. We have noticed that any video content we upload for clients gets multiple times the coverage of those posts without. https://thesmallbusinessfairy.com/how-do-you-add-captions-to-a-facebook-video/

The thing we love about the world at the moment is how #digital #technology is creating equality for all. It democratizes education and allows everyone the possibility to be innovative. It’s great to see a huge drive across the tech companies to curate content that is accessible by all. For example, 20 years ago the image alt text was for slow connections. If your old dial-up connection was slow you could choose not to look at the images, to stop them downloading (can you imagine?). A white box with a red x in the corner would appear to indicate that an image was meant to show there. As a developer, you could add a caption and/or description to explain what was meant to be in the image. Nowadays we still do that because of its importance to software readers for the visually impaired (as well as search engine optimization). The reader will describe to the viewer what’s happening in the image and so the person’s disability does not hinder them from accessing the same information that you or I can access.

The importance of #mobile #optimisation for your #website can’t be overestimated. Google are currently re-organising the entire database and from next year websites that are not mobile optimised won’t even rank on the search engine. We have no definitive date for doomsday but it is on its way. So why has is this happening? Read on to find out more.

As many of our regular readers will know, Aisling works with many #designers, #crafters and #artists. As one of our most talented clients who is blazing a trail in the Irish fashion industry, we had to feature the renowned fashion designer Ginan Abbas. A third generation dressmaker, she utilises the skills taught to her by her mother and grandmother. It’s obviously in the genes. Her passion for dressmaking began when she was given her first sewing machine, and she has now over 20 years experience in tailoring and designing stunning dresses, bridal wear, evening gowns and dance costumes. Along the way she has worked with John Rocca and Lennon - see more here.

Sue left school at sixteen and was married by the age of twenty, but at the age of twenty five, she found herself as a single mum to three kids in a women’s refuge. Amazingly, she turned her life around and is one of the most inspirational social entrepreneurs we have had the privilege to meet. She returned to school as a mature student, taking a maths access course at night school. Read all about her here:

Avatars are a super way to create a #brand identity to help your customers connect to your brand. Recent #research in the #scientific community has proven that human beings are evolving into more sentimental beings. We seek connections everywhere and readily identify with those brands that create an emotive response. This can be created through humour, sadness, fear of missing out (#FOMO), happiness etc. As high quality visual content can have a major impact on your sales conversion rate, the most innovative companies use imagery to create this connection.

At a recent workshop we did, the number one question was how to use the new #Boomerang feature in #Instagram so we decided to explain what a cool tool it is. It comes from the an actual “Boomerang” (a curved, flat toy, which can be thrown and automatically returned to the thrower). Instagram’s take on a Boomerang is a mini video that plays forward and also backward (back to you like the physical Boomerang. Basically, the Boomerang app takes a burst of photos (20 frames to be exact), then speeds them up and plays them forward and backward to create a looping Boomerang video. We made this one below on our trip to the National Gallery of Ireland.
