BIRDING WEEKEND AT THE SELKIRK ARMS, KIRKCUDBRIGHT WITH JAMES CHAMPION
17th and 18th February 2017
Galloway in winter is a haven for birds, especially geese, of which we may encounter up to six species, with spectacular flocks of Barnacle Geese being perhaps the most visually pleasing. The sight of these elegant migrants from the Arctic as they flight in to roost is enough to stir the blood of any birder.
Ducks are also a major feature of the Galloway waters, both inland and coastal, and we will be hoping for up to 14 species of dabbling, diving and sea ducks, all of which by February will be in their most colourful and attractive plumage. We will look for Teal, Shoveler, Wigeon, Gadwall and Pintail in the shallow wetlands at the RSPB’s Mersehead reserve, diving ducks on nearby deeper lochs, and depending on the tide, we may see rafts of sea ducks such as Scaup, Red-breasted Merganser and Common Scoter near the mouth of the Nith.
