Household Hazardous Waste and What You Need to Know

Not sure what products are deemed hazardous or how to properly dispose of items that are poisonous, extremely flammable, or corrosive? Oregon Metro has a list of commonly hazardous products along with information about safe use, storage, and disposal. oregonmetro.gov/tools-living/healthy-home/common-hazardous-products

Keep your family and the environment safe by using non-toxic alternatives if possible and buy only what you need. Some suggested green cleaning options such as baking soda, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and vegetable oil-based liquid soap, their uses and what they replace are outlined at oregonmetro.gov/tools-living/healthy-home/green-cleaning

If you are not sure if a product is hazardous, Metro advises to "Read product labels carefully before you buy and watch for the signal words danger, warning and caution. Danger means the product is extremely hazardous because it is poisonous, extremely flammable or corrosive. Warning or caution indicates a product that is somewhat less hazardous but still poses dangers."

Need more information? Contact Metro at 503-234-3000. Metro also has a schedule of HHW event days in the Portland Metro area at oregonmetro.gov/…/neighb…/2017-neighborhood-collection-event. These free events are held from 9:00 am -2:00 pm. No collection events are scheduled on Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends.

You may not agree with her philosophy, but I gotta say Marie Kondo nailed it with her rolling clothes technique. So much easier to find what I need and keep the rest neat.

As usual, in Oregon we take environmentalism and sustainability to the nth degree. Check out the measures to which this winery goes. Horse drawn carriages to deliver the grapes to the vineyard, bicycles to pump the wine from the barrels to vats, canoes to take the bottles downriver to the distributor. Minimal footprint at Illahe. Making wine like it's 1899!  http://www.kgw.com/news/local/oregon-winery-makes-wine-without-electricity/277323529
