EAT. DRINK. GATHER. Welcome to Portland's Diner, The Original Dinerant!

In the 1950s and 60s, diners and supper clubs were social hubs, gathering spaces that blended a bit nostalgia with the modern rhythms of daily life. At The Original, Portland's downtown destination for all-day elevated dining, we honor the past as we listen in on the pulse of Portland’s adventurous and evolving tastes.

Updated diner meals dished out in a modern setting that's open late, with booths & a candlelit bar.- Google
"Chicken and Waffle sliders that tasted like nothing but raw rosemary."
"Good to know before you go-- prices aren't exactly diner-esque here."

Went there first time ever 3-4 days ago. Food was good(the only thing to turn my mood around after the service I experienced) Decor is inviting. So its disappointing that the waitresses are dull and un-engaging except one who had a great smile.. Our waitress in particular was very rude, looking around, tapping her fingers even as my boyfriend began to order! It was no surprise that she had to come back to our table again and ask him to repeat what he had just ordered.. Then she brought me the wrong kind of drink. I see others have had similar experiences and it has yet to change.

An absolutely fantastic experience. The service was polite, professional, and engaging. Food was very reasonably priced for the quality, of which was beyond my expectations. I ordered the "Elvis Sighting". It was prepared perfectly, I have no complaints. My plate arrived warmed and beautifully arranged. The decor gives the restaurant the feeling of both a quaint diner and a fine dining restaurant. I will be returning to try the rest of the menu.

This place is awful. I just wrote 6 paragraphs that google somehow didn't compute. I'm not going to write it all again, because i don't care enough. i will mention the lowlights of the meal though: A pattern of underseasoning was disappointing. For the prices at this place, i was expecting well crafted food to come to our table. We sampled every item on the app menu, and it was one disaster after another with the dishes. 1. Over-smoked chicken wings with a water and feta "blue cheese" dressing. This dish is a conceptional failure 2. Chicken and Waffle sliders that tasted like nothing but raw rosemary. 3. Donut sliders that had unseasoned and overcooked beef. 4. Hot pockets were ok. not great, but ok 5. The worst poutine in town. The chefs seem to have very little idea of how to execute food. The worst part? All we wanted to do was spend a few more minutes with our dear out of town friends, but they turned the lights on bright and basically told us to get out. If i ever return to this place, i will have suffered a grand head injury and i should probably be taken to the ER.

I went here today for lunch and it was a mixed experience. First off the environment is inviting, with a decor that is a bit retro and comfortable. However, the host was without a personality and was at a lost as to what to do with a party of 5!! She never smiled and when asked anything she either turned away in avoidance or responded condescendingly. Our server had one positive attribute, she smiled!! But she didn't know the specials, was unorganized, and lacked any personality too!! Why 3 stars? Well our drinks were outstanding and our food was decent. I would agree with the comment about the lack of seasoning! The boozy shake, The Dude, is worth the lack luster service. I would love to come back, but I'm not inclined to spend my hard earned money, nor my valuable time in a place that makes me feel like a bother!

Great spot for breakfast/brunch. I was staying at a hotel nearby and most of the other restaurants had limited and non-traditional menus, when I just wanted some of the oldies but goodies. The Original offers a variety of options from pancakes to chicken and waffles. I had the cornmeal and bacon waffle and added fried chicken. It was delicious! My husband had the Spanish omelette, which was also very tasty. Staff was also super friendly.

This is a hotel bar. If you find yourself in here you're either stuck in Portland on a business trip and unfamiliar with the good places to go or you're just plain lost. The only thing sophisticated about this place is the prices. If you're looking for a $14 salad, you're in luck. $8 shot of jager? $6 pint of beer? Sounds like a place that really... "honors the past as we listen in on the pulse of Portland’s adventurous and evolving tastes"... that's from the website. Yes, this is a very nostalgic place that reminds me of the good old days where young alternative kids worked in a hotel bar and served tourists average drinks and food at Disneyland prices. Ahhh, the good old days of this country. So Original!

Not a bad spot for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. They're even open late night to satisfy your drunken cravings. Don't expect to get blown away by their food. It's ok, but nothing that'll keep you coming back. The atmosphere is fantastic and worth the trip alone. Clean inside and out. Plenty of lighting for your food photos. Prices are good and so are the drinks.
