No trip to the Aloha State is complete without trying Hawaiian shave ice! Unlike the classic American snow cone, this popular island treat is shaved (not crushed) and is fluffy, creamy, and incredibly refreshing. First, the ice is infused with flavored syrups made with local ingredients like guava, pineapple, passion fruit, and mango. It’s drizzled with sweetened condensed milk, then served in a plastic cup with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Shave ice gained worldwide popularity after Japanese plantation workers immigrated to Hawaii, and today, visitors can enjoy this dessert all over the islands! Here are some of our favorite Hawaiian shave ice shops.

True to its name, ahi poke is a traditional Hawaiian food prepared with raw yellowfin tuna that’s been diced into cubes. A traditional poke recipe calls for seasonings like soy sauce, green onions, and sesame oil but can include other ingredients such as fresh avocado or chopped chilis.
