“While on the outside I may have appeared healthy, a disease was raging inside of me. This picture was taken in August 2017. One month later, a night of stomach pain ended with a diagnosis of stage IV colon cancer at 29 years old.”

“I take each day as it comes and think that it is a gift that should be cherished. This is the way I always should have lived, but it is very easy to get wrapped up in the day-to-day stressors and issues and we rarely take the time to appreciate all that we have. Spend time doing what you love with the people that you love. I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without my amazing wife, my family, and my friends.” – Patrick, a Dana-Farber patient

“William’s type of cancer is very rare. The money that funds that type of research has changed his prognosis from what it would have been 10 years ago. If that money isn’t donated for research, then it doesn’t give William a chance to live a long and happy, healthy life.”- Stephanie, mom of patient William, 1

“Every year, we gather for dinner the night before the Jimmy Fund Walk and tell stories about Darby, even if we’ve heard them a hundred times before. Remembering her through laughter is great for all of us, and it’s just how she would want to be remembered. On the Boston Marathon® course, it’s always wonderful to be greeted and cheered on by strangers who knew Darby and were inspired by her.” – Kevin, a member of Team Darby in the Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai

Team Darby walks in honor of Darby, who was a longtime Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund supporter even before she was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Determined to make a difference, Darby created her Walk team in 2013 just after learning her cancer had spread. She passed away in 2014, and her team continues to walk each year to help Dana-Farber find a cure.

“The most important piece of advice I would give to someone facing a cancer diagnosis is to always be willing and open to accept help. It truly takes a village when facing a diagnosis, planning treatment, and beyond. If it were not for my care team at Dana-Farber and my personal network, I would have had a very different experience.”

After being diagnosed with stage III lymphoma in 2014, Josh came to Dana-Farber for treatment. He is now celebrating his fourth year of being cancer-free. For Josh, life after treatment includes trying new restaurants, cycling, and surrounding himself with loved ones.

“When I was first diagnosed, I Googled ‘stage 4 breast cancer’ and a lot of what I saw was so sad and scary. Most of the images made me feel even worse. I want to fight against that narrative. When another woman gets diagnosed and Googles their disease, I want her to see that there are positive and hopeful stories out there. I want to show other patients that their lives are not over and you can still feel good in your body, even with a serious diagnosis.” – Alexis, 35, a Dana-Farber patient

Tune in August 21 and 22 for the WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon presented by Arbella Insurance Foundation to hear more inspiring stories like Alexis’s. #KCANCER #SpreadTheGood

“On July 4, 2014, my dearest friends Crista and Pat, along with their son, Connor, welcomed their superhero Carrick into the world. Born with acute myeloid leukemia, Carrick fought with everything he had, from his first breath until his last on June 5, 2017. Carrick's short time here was filled with so much love, hope, strength, and courage. Carrick taught me to love a little harder, to find the light on the darkest days, and to fight when I've wanted to give up. Running for Dana-Farber’s team allows me to keep Carrick's memory alive and to support the incredible place that gave us all 1,064 days of love with Carrick.” – Michelle, a member of Dana-Farber’s 2018 B.A.A. Half Marathon® team

“In March 2018, our lives forever changed when our middle child was diagnosed with a brain tumor. At 10 years old, she had her first surgery in Florida, where we live. We had heard of Dana-Farber from friends and KNEW we had to get our daughter there as soon as possible. Since then, we have been residing in Boston while she is in treatment. Her care team at Dana-Farber is giving her the best chance at survival. We would simply be lost without them! I am running and raising money for Dana Farber to help fund research and treatment for children and families like my own!” – Kristy, a member of Dana-Farber’s 2018 B.A.A. Half Marathon® team #RunDanaFarber

“I remember there was a young boy and his father in our gift shop. It was evident that the boy was a patient. He kept asking, ‘Can I get it? Can I get it?’ He was holding a little magnet that said, ‘You’re the greatest MOM.’ He wanted so badly to get a gift for his mom. Sometimes you don’t always think about what the parents are going through. I thought, ‘Wow!’ The gift shop is that little experience that can make somebody’s day a little brighter.” – Deborah Flynn, Retail Manager of Dana-Farber’s Friends’ Place and The Friends’ Corner Gift Shop
