Born today in 1907, Varian Fry was an American journalist who ran a rescue mission in Vichy France during World War II. Fry was able to rescue about 2,500 Jews and Nazi opponents, including great figures such as Marc Chagall, Hannah Arendt, and Max Ernst. In 1997, we featured the exhibition, "Assignment: Rescue, The Story of Varian Fry and the Emergency Rescue Committee," which included a dramatic installation that described Fry's mission.
