Born today in 1907, Varian Fry was an American journalist who ran a rescue mission in Vichy France during World War II. Fry was able to rescue about 2,500 Jews and Nazi opponents, including great figures such as Marc Chagall, Hannah Arendt, and Max Ernst. In 1997, we featured the exhibition, "Assignment: Rescue, The Story of Varian Fry and the Emergency Rescue Committee," which included a dramatic installation that described Fry's mission. Watch the video to hear more from the exhibition's curator, Susan Goodman, on why Chagall was so drawn to images of Jesus on the cross.
In the crucified Christ, this modern artist saw the personification of Jewish suffering, pain, and sadness.

Happy birthday to American artist Sol LeWitt, born today in 1928! LeWitt is credited with pioneering the Conceptual art movement, which arose in opposition to the Abstract Expressionist movement of the 1950s. LeWitt also changed the way art was produced and viewed. Instead of painting on a canvas which would then be placed on a wall, he drew directly onto the walls of museums and other art spaces. See one of his innovative wall drawings here: http://ow.ly/oIdXn

On view in New York May 10-Sept. 29, the retrospective is an appropriately bicoastal survey for an artist (1945-2003) who came of age during one of the most fertile periods for Conceptualism in Los Angeles before establishing himself as a canonical New York appropriation artist.

"What Ms. Bloom does so well here, and has done elsewhere, is to expand and extrapolate even as she winnows down the collection. She leaves us with a museum that’s bigger, in a sense, than the one she started with."
