Drugged driving is on the rise, at least according to studies recently released in Virginia. One of the studies shows that 40% of the drivers killed in traffic accidents tested positive for drugs. Those substances include not only street drugs such as methamphetamine, heroin and cocaine, but also prescription drugs. In the case of marijuana, the percentage rose from 12.4% to more than 15% between 2007 and last year. During that same time period, the number of drivers arrested for DUI-alcohol declined by 30%, while the percentage of arrests for drugged driving increased by 4%. When you add in the problems presented by distracted driving, our roads may well be more dangerous than ever.

In this blog article, Phoenix criminal attorney Adam Feldman talks about the investigation of sexual assaults on college campuses. In response to federal legislation requiring universities and colleges to report sexual assaults, Arizona State University, Michigan State University, the University of Connecticut and other schools have formed Sexual Victims Units to deal with the issue. Some also believe that the formation of the SVU’s have been prompted by public perception that some schools have not been treating sex crimes in a manner that recognizes the seriousness of the offenses involved. At ASU, for example, of the 65 sexual assaults reported over a five-year period, only ten of the alleged attackers were expelled from school.

An officer with the Phoenix Police Department has been jailed after allegedly assaulting his wife during a domestic argument. The officer is a 13-year veteran of the Phoenix PD. We note that the assault itself allegedly consisted of grabbing the wife’s arm, and the reports state that she suffered “minor injury.” Misdemeanor assault in Arizona does not necessarily require injuries or even force. It can consist of placing another person in reasonable apprehension of injury. If classified as a domestic violence offense, Schneider could face additional penalties beyond those ordinarily applicable for a simple assault.
