Bleh. The food here reminded me of the food that you would get at a retirement home- bland and uninspired. I thought this would be a good place to go for a "holiday-esque" work lunch. But maybe that was a bad call on my part. Well, the potato pierogies were pretty good-- we should have ordered more of that. The salmon and rock shrimp cake was okay. The bavarian pretzel was pretty impressive--- a huge pretzel that was hanging from a stand that came with three dipping sauces-- of which the cheese dip was my favorite. I ordered the sausage trio for my main, the sausages were really disappointing. They all looked like they were boiled, and boiled sausages are just... boring. The bratwurst probably was the most disappointing bratwurst I've ever had in my life... and they usually have so much potential! Maybe I should have just gone for one of the seafood dishes--- but I wanted to try the sausages because I figured a German restaurant had to do it right. Oh well. My coworker got the roasted sirloin, and that weird sweet and sour gravy mix was just too sweet, and it just tasted wrong. Tastebuds were being confused, and I went back to eating my sausages. Well, on the bright side, I was very happy with my pumpkin martini, and the RK riesling wasn't bad! But again, contributing to the retirement home comment-- this place is a bit dark on the inside. Once we stepped outside, it was like AHHH my eyes, it's so bright!

The Berghoff may not be fine dining, but it is one of my favorite Chicago restaurants. I enjoyed my meal with the family most recently in June 2014, but I have been at least a half-dozen times over the past 5 or 6 years. While I do agree with some of the other reviewers that the quality of some of the dishes may have slipped some, they were still quite good. I enjoyed the Chicken Cordon Blu, although the chicken did not blow me away with quality. Still good. My wife enjoyed a very unique salad off the seasonal menu, which we both agreed was one of the better salads we've ever had. My daughter ordered the kids chicken fingers, which were most definitely be the best chicken fingers I've ever enjoyed (fresh, tender, excellent taste, lean, not greasy). The beer was great, as expected. We ordered a pretzel appetizer, served with three mustards - excellent. The complimentary bread served at the table was less premium than in the past. The service was good, and the served talked to and engaged my 4-year-old daughter very well. The atmosphere is authentic Western Bavarian German mixed with early 20th century Chicago. I would certainly recommend the Berghoff to friends and family. I will return.

Nice place for family dining with above average German food. Great for quick lunch and after dinner drinks at the bar. Really has that comfort food feel and real cozy especially around the holidays. The food isn't out if this world but it's close to traditional so don't expect eclectic fusions of any kind here. Service is pretty sharp.

In the downstairs restaurant (lunch only?) try the turkey reuben with sauerkraut! They also make some pretty good beers and the bartenders are friendly and professional. I'm particularly fond of their weiss beer. It's not Julies Echter but it's pretty damn good!

The Berghoff is one of those classic Chicago establishments that exists downtown. Many people go there for lunch during the week, and I'd venture to guess that if you live in Chicago, you've at least heard of the Berghoff, even if you haven't been there. The actual restaurant is pretty cool, in that it sits downstairs in a cafeteria like format. You walk up servers and order whatever they are offering that day. The decor is neat and definitely feels like an old school restaurant. Overall, I'd say the food is pretty average. If I go there, it's for the atmosphere and place more than it is the food. They serve pretty standard food for lunch (burgers, sandwiches, pasta). Not a place I'd avoid, but not one that I'm likely to go to with any regularity.
