Wow - what great service! I posted a service request and received an email within an hour with a suggestion that ultimately resolved my problem! If I had been unable to resolve the problem, Scott was willing to make a service call on a Saturday to prevent me from going all weekend without a working refrigerator. We're lucky to have such a friendly and helpful appliance repair service right here in New London.

Thanks for your kind words! We have lots of ways we can help our customers besides our expert service calls. If there are any possible ways the customer can resolve their appliance problem themselves, we let them know. We even have online help and parts available for those repairs that are appropriate for a do-it-yourselfer.

I had a refrigerator problem which I ignored for as long as I could as I felt that calling an appliance repair person was on par with taking a car problem to a garage. I was pleasantly surprised when I called and explained the problem as best I could to Susan and she seemed to know what the problem was. The next day Scott and Sam showed up as agreed, put booties over their boots and proceeded to confirm the diagnosis and to fix said problem quickly and professionally. My bill was a bit over $300.00 but was, when compared to shopping for and buying a new refrigerator, a better deal. I would call them again for an appliance problem. Thank you, Susan, Scott, and Sam

Very positive experience all around. Our call for help was answered promptly. Scott came the day we called to assess the problem with our refrigerator. He was very thorough & knowledgeable. We enjoyed having him in our home to help us resolve the issue with the refrigerator. We will definitely call The Appliance Guru for future needs.

I had a problem with my dishwasher. Local repair service couldn't fix it. I called the Appliance Guru and he guided me right to the problem...a door latch assembly switch! He is extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

Happy to be of service, Andrew!

Our 18-year-old GE refrigerator began freezing food in the fresh food compartment. Unit located in our vacation condo which we use sporadically so difficult to monitor and measure on a continuous basis. I would have been glad to pay for a service call to diagnose cause but Susan telephonically walked me through several measurement steps over a two-day period resulting in a recommendation to buy a new refrigerator. Saved me the financial and time cost of a service call and cost them the revenue of the call but gained them the gratitude of a most appreciative person in the "Cloud". Am actually looking forward to the next appliance problem and hoping to meet the husband/son team who do the hands-on work!

Thanks for the kind words, Dan! We are definitely trying to build long-term relationships with customers and not just earn a service call fee, so when we can help people with phone advice, we do! We don't wish any appliance trouble on you, but it will be our pleasure to help you in the future if you need it.

I contacted the Appliance Guru online to schedule an appointment to fix my double oven. I described the problem in detail and hoped for a quick appointment (during the holidays--sure!). I was amazed to get an immediate email response from Susan who diagnosed my oven's problem and then said that it wasn't worth it to have it repaired, that given its age and problem I should just get a new one. So I was able to benefit from holiday sales, had wasted no time or money on an unnecessary service call, and will certainly contact Appliance Guru for all my appliance needs. These people are fantastic! Eleanor White

Thank you for your kind words, Eleanor! I'm glad that our information was able to help you. There are just some circumstances where repairing an appliance is not the best option, and your oven was a classic example. I'm happy that we were able to determine that for you quickly so you could move on to finding those holiday sales. Enjoy your new oven! ~Susan

Good but very expensive! The Appliance Guru is very knowledgeable and professional. The problem I have is he charges an arm and a leg. He repaired my washer with a new pump which costs $50. I was charged $350 for the repair. This repair only took about an hour including time to train his son. He is much quicker than other repair services so I believe he is capitalizing on this. I would say if you have an emergency then give him a call. If you can wait a few days for someone else then I would. I called the authorized LG after the repair and was quoted $200 for the same repair.

Ken has a point: $350 for an appliance repair isn't usually happy news, especially in today's economy. But providing in-home appliance repair with the skill, speed, and guarantees that we offer does bring a lot of joy to folks in our area who prize convenience, honesty, and reliability. Many hours are spent behind the scenes to train and research for repairs so that we can be in and out of your home lickety-split. We're very sorry that the repair fee caused Ken distress. We quoted the fee up front to him, as we do to all customers, using a national appliance repair pricing service to keep things as transparent as possible, and he gave us the go-ahead. I suppose we could have dawdled and taken our time on the repair, which would have given him more perception of value, but most people seem happy when I get them up and running quickly and then let them get on with their day.

Dishwasher Washability Complaints

Most of the time you can improve the quality of your dishwasher’s performance without needing a service call. When you notice that dishes are not getting clean and/or residue is being left behind, here’s what to do.

Check for actual machine malfunctions:

1. After you have started the dishwasher and it fills with water, open the door and check to see if the usual amount of water is present.

2. During the wash cycle, listen at the door for sounds of the wash motor running (normal water movement noise).

3. When the dishwasher is done, make sure that there is no water left standing in the basin and that the detergent dispenser cup opened up.

If the water fill, wash, and drain cycles seem to be occurring normally, then your problem is almost certainly related to the dishwasher needing to be cleaned and better detergent use. (If you noticed any problems with the above, then call The Appliance Guru!)

Clean your dishwasher:

1. Clean the filter(s). Many models of dishwashers have one or more filters that need to be cleaned regularly. Gunked-up filters will result in washability problems such as food debris getting left behind on your dishes. See your unit’s Use and Care Guide for how to do this! Some of the filters have such fine mesh that you should use a brush to help clean them.

2. Run a couple of empty cycles using a dishwasher cleaning product such as Glisten.

3. Run your dishwasher as usual using a high-quality detergent. We recommend the “Finish” group of products. Our favorite is Finish Quantum (either regular or “Power and Free”). Poor quality detergent, especially liquid or gels, will usually result in washability issues.

Bonus info:

Do not rinse your dishes thoroughly before loading them into your dishwasher! Just scrape off any chunks, but leave food residue behind. Detergents work best if your dishes are still very dirty when you put them in the dishwasher. This also protects your glassware from etching (that cloudiness that can occur over time).

If your dryer has this white vinyl vent hose, get rid of it now! This is a bona fide fire hazard. All it takes is a single spark of flaming lint from inside the dryer to ignite all of that lint accumulated inside the vent hose. Dryer lint is an excellent firestarter and the white vinyl vent hose material itself is flammable. Dryer vents are the single largest cause of dryer related fires.

Get rid of the white vinyl dryer vent hose and replace it with smooth wall aluminum (best) or the collapsible, corrugated aluminum vent duct material. Both of these materials are dryer manufacturer approved and are not flammable.

Many appliance owners are frustrated today because they don't realize that the days of buying an appliance and having it work trouble-free for 10 to 15 years are long gone.

The good news is that you can buy an appliance today for about what you would have paid 15-20 years ago.

The bad news is that there's an on-going cost of appliance ownership in doing repairs-- industry average is every 2 to 4 years.

What varies among brands and models is how big will that repair need to be, not whether or not it'll need one-- I guarantee you it will!

Short answer to the question asked in the title of this post: NONE! That brand doesn't exist anymore.

As for brand recommendations, I have a complete report that I update periodically and give away for free when people subscribe to our free newsletter, Appliantology: The Oracle of Appliance Enlightenment.
