iPhone data recovery - extreme
Here is an example of importance of taking your phone to the iPhone repair shop with dedicated and knowledgeable staff. The customer, a Realestate Agent, brought her water damaged phone to us to fix. The phone was dropped in the water the same day and the data on the phone was extremely valuable. Cam connected the bare iPhone motherboard to known good charging port and screen and did the backup. It turned out that the phone was completely fine after an iso bath and reassembly. From my experience most other repair shops would have turned down this job as the outcome is not guaranteed but The Apple Guy staff will always try their best to save your phone or at least the data on it.

MacBook battery
Here is another post about MacBook lithium batteries! Last week one caught fire and closed the workshop for three hours as we waited for air to clear form smoke and fumes. Today we've seen another classic example of battery swelling to such an extent to completely lift the trackpad out of the top case. I did not take a photo of the lifted trackpad, but here is the photo of the offending battery. This customer got off lightly with only about $350 of damage including the new battery, trackpad and labour for install. See The Apple Guy for similar repairs in NZ

Lithium MacBook Battery Caught Fire!

It's not the first time it happened but this one smoked so much that we had to shut the shop for few hours.

Customer brought the MacBook Pro Retina 15" for a battery replacement. The technician opened the MacBook bottom lid and pretty much straight away, the battery started to smoke and throw flames.

We don't have any videos or photos of this event as dedicated Tech risked life and limb to save the MacBook from total combustion. He ripped the burning battery from the MacBoook, the ones in the know will appreciate how difficult this is as they are glued to the top case, carried it through the The Apple Guy shop and threw it out on the street. There was so much smoke that half of the Manners Street was covered.

The Apple Guy shop had to be closed to public due to toxic fumes for three hours! This MacBook costed us few dollars.

It's still early to tell what the damage to the laptop was caused by the battery. There are some burn marks visible on trackpad and parts of the motherboard. The trackpad shield looks quite burned and still has some molten plastic from the battery.

Thanks Cheap Skates on Cuba St for lending us the massive air fan to get the smoke and the burned battery smell out of the shop.

The shots of the battery out on the street after it had stopped burning and smoking. No wonder new regulations for aviation security regarding transport of lithium batteries on planes. I would not want to be in the plane cabin when one of these catches fire!

Great value MacBook Pro 15"
15" MacBooks are super popular and hard to find. We just got couple of them for sale in the Manners St shop at the moment. They are very affordable as they are pre Retina models ($1250). MagSafe charger and 3 month warranty included.

MacBook and iMac Motherboard Repairs

Finally!!! We can provide this great service to our customers.

Dead main boards to motherboards are the most costly Mac repair that traditionally consisted of replacing the faulty motherboard with new working one.
For most MacBook Pro and Air models this repair is so expensive that most customers (especially if insurance is not paying the bill) opt out and look at buying a new or second hand MacBook or iMac.

Not any more! We can now fix lots of common MacBook motherboard problems without the expense of the new Apple motherboard. Our technician has perfected the art of main board troubleshooting and has so far fixed so many damaged motherboards that we can finally offer this service to our customers.

Most common MacBook motherboard problems are caused by liquid damage. Water or wine is spilled on the keyboard, it finds its way to the motherboard and it either shorts and burns a motherboard component or causes corrosion over time.

We have so far seen many backlight board failures that were only fixable by board replacement. We can now fix motherboard back light issue at half the cost it would be to replace the entire board. Same goes with power or charging issues or any other burned or corroded chip on the main board.

On iMac the most common issues are GPU and power supply issues.

There are still some motherboard problems that we can't solve and would require new motherboard. CPU failure for example is one of these. CPU chip is hard to replace and the success rate is so low that it is still cheaper to replace entire board.

We will always quote customers for both options, motherboard replacement or motherboard repair.

For older MacBook Pro Unibody models, replacement of the motherboard with the new one exceeds the cost of the second hand unit on the market so dead board always meant no repair. Now we can fix these apple devices for a fair price and give them few more years of life.

Good news people, the new iPhone SE will be just as cheap to fix as an iPhone 5/5s!
The most important thing is that LCD screen, digitizer, glass and frame are exactly the same for iPhone SE and iPhone 5s. There is already a steady and relatively cheap supply of 5s screens.
Most other parts are interchangeable also bar rear camera, battery and charging port. We can assume you won't need a new battery for SE for some time still (you'd hope so), so the only part that needs changing often and is different is the charging port.

We are very happy about the iPhone SE design, not just because it makes it easier for us to do repairs but because it is also our model of choice for shop and staff use.

So don't be embarrassed if you drop your new phone, just let us know and we'll have it fixed in no time at all.
