The Personalized Medicine Summit will be held at the Life Sciences Institute, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC Jun 7-9, 2015. The intent of this summit, organized by the Personalized Medicine Initiative with its partners Genome British Columbia, Centre for Drug Research and Development and LifeSciences BC and the Life Science Institute of the University of British Columbia, is to make recommendations on the best practices for the implementation of Personalized Medicine (PM) in British Columbia and Canada.

Despite the narrow view of biodiversity imposed on us by our limited senses, life on Earth is, and always has been predominantly microbial. Microbial life surrounds us completely, forms the foundation of every major ecosystem, and is essential to sustaining all other life, including human. Microbiome Insights is working closely with the PMI in understanding the association of an individual’s microbiome with a healthy and a disease state. #microbiome   #microbiomeresearch   #personalizedmedicine   #precisemedicine   #medicalresearch

The Personalized Medicine Initiative "GenXys" aims to improve prescribing practices with the incorporation of patient specific genomic information. Its products will enable physicians and other practitioners to tailor prescriptions to individuals using the GenXys clinical decision support system (TreatRx) that incorporates clinically effective genetic information into standard prescribing procedures within the family practice setting. Family physicians and other health care providers face difficult decisions when they try to predict whether a patient will benefit from a newly prescribed medication or whether they will experience harmful effects. #precisionmedicine   #personalizedmedicine   #preciseprescription   #prescription   #physician   #healthcare

The Personalize Medicine Initiative "FIBROMDx" is developing non-invasive molecular diagnostic blood tests that can distinguish various stages of fibrosis both rapidly and accurately. Liver fibrosis is a ‘wound healing’ process that shows no symptoms, resulting from various chronic liver diseases. The main causes of liver fibrosis are chronic hepatitis B and hepatitis C viral (HCV) infections, along with alcoholism and obesity. If left untreated, fibrosis leads to liver failure, cancer, and ultimately death. #liverfibrosis   #cirrhosis   #personalizedmedicine   #precisionmedicine   #medicalresearch

Contextual Genomics and the Personalized Medicine Initiative aim to revolutionize the cancer clinical practice through nationally accessible tumor genetic profiles. Individual genetic tumor profiles will give better precision in cancer diagnosis and allow professionals to more accurately determine the most effective treatment options for the patient. Improvements in cancer care will need to embrace the concepts that each patient is different, each case of cancer is unique, and each tumor is constituted of genetically diverse populations of cells. #cancer   #cancerresearch   #personalizedmedicine   #precisionmedicine   #cancerprecisionmedicine

The Personalized Medicine Initiative, "Personalized Oncogenomics (POGS)" is a dynamic multidisciplinary team based at the BC Cancer Agency aims to provide an individualized approach that is centred on each patient’s cancer’s unique molecular constitution and will revolutionize cancer prediction, detection, and treatment. Personalized Oncogenomics is based on the premise that every cancer is unique and hard to treat. #personalizedmedicine   #cancer   #cancerresearch   #cancerprecision   #cancerprecisionmedicine

Early detection of disease allowing early intervention could dramatically improve health and decrease health costs. Historically, such efforts have been hampered by the lack of reliable, individualized evidence for early stage disease. The advent of low-cost genomic, proteomic, metabolomic and microbiomic (Omic) analyses has the potential to provide such evidence. The Personalized Medicine Initiative has formed Molecular You Corporation (MYCO) to revolutionize effective prevention. Traditionally medicine has had difficulty in identifying people at risk of developing a disease or in the very early stages of disease. A comprehensive innovative approach designed to detect early signs of potential disease would allow early stage intervention before serious consequences occur. #preventivemedicine   #personalizedmedicine   #molecularyou   #precisionmedicine   #diseasedetection

Diabetes is a spectrum of individualized conditions, with each patient arriving to a similar phenotype via distinct gene-environment interactions. Each patient responds differently to the same treatment; personalized approach is key to successful and cost-effective diagnosis and treatment.  The Personalized Medicine Initiative "Personalized Biomarkers Inc." aims to develop reliable biomarkers that can predict the patient’s response to drugs and guide prescribing with more precision. As of 2014, 387 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes at a stunning cost of over $450 billion for medical care. The disease is complex and caused by various factors that influence each patient, such as the individual’s unique genetic makeup and environment. With advances in genetics and our understanding of the mechanisms underlying this disease, we are poised to more effectively diagnose, treat, and one day cure this devastating disease. #diabetes   #diabetesresearch   #personalizedmedicine   #precisionmedicine

The Personalized Medicine Initiative, "Inform Every Autism" presents an individualized approach to autism using genetic and environmental targets. The initiative aims to identify the earliest causes, more informative subtypes, and prospective novel therapies for autism. Earlier and more accurate diagnoses of ASDs will help patients and their families manage the disorders with the best possible results. Inform Every Autism aims to guide an individualized approach to the detection, management and treatment that is more effective than the currently available methods. #autism   #autismresearch   #personalizedmedicine   #precisionmedicine    #informeveryautism
