PageSpeed Insights errors a bit strict

I sometimes get the feeling the Consider Fixing error messages in PageSpeed Insights may be a little on the strict side :-)

Be aware when moving to HTTPS

Just a quick heads up to anyone thinking of moving to HTTPS

Keep an eye on your bandwidth usage when doing it.

I moved my site the other day and my bandwidth usage shot up so high my site was offline for a few hours :-(

It's looking like the main reason for the sudden increase is the search engines crawling the site, checking all the redirects, etc.

With Baidu, Yahoo/Slurp, Bingbot and Googlebot all doing this at the same time my bandwidth usage went sky high.

John Mueller confirmed in a comment on this post https://plus.google.com/+JohnMueller/posts/PY1xCWbeDVC that Google will sometimes try to recrawl a bit faster when sites are moved like this, but should settle back down.

I don't know if the other search engines do the same, but would assume so.

Planning on moving to HTTPS? Here are 13 FAQs! What's missing? Let me know in the comments and I'll expand this over time, perhaps it's even worth a blog… - John Mueller - Google+

Yep +Cori Shirk is right. I assumed that's what you meant but when I did a quick search I only got a one box so was not sure what you were referring to. Then had to run out.

Bit the bullet and moved http://www.uksmallbusinessdirectory.co.uk/ to a new server today.

Not only a new server, also from Windows to Linux, from Classic ASP to PHP and HTTP to HTTPS.

Hardly tested it, so will be working on the live site over next few days.

I don't even know if it's working yet as still waiting for name server changes to propagate :-(

Fun times ahead!

Is there any point in pinging Google Blog Search

With Google Blog Search having long gone the way of the dinosaurs is there any point in pinging it?
If your blog is not listed in our results, we want to hear about it. Enter your blog's web or feed address below and we'll do our best to add it to our index as quickly as possible. Your blog's address: e.g. googleblog.blogspot.com or googleblog.blogspot.com/atom.xml ...

Will Accelerated Mobile Pages be used for other things rather than News Articles?

Time will tell, but another obvious way of using Accelerated Mobile Pages is Online Business Directory Listings.

If you are using a mobile device and want to find a local business, you don't want a slow clunky page which overly uses graphics and other distractions, you just want the information as quickly and clearly as possible.

The UK Small Business Directory is trialing Accelerated Mobile Pages by creating AMP HTML versions of all it's 200,000+ directory listings and also combining this with JSON LD markup.

Very basic demonstration listings can be seen at http://www.uksmallbusinessdirectory.co.uk/amp-pages.asp time will tell if the search engines think this is a good use of the Accelerated Mobile Pages Framework or not.
The UK Small Business Directory pioneers Accelerated Mobile Pages by creating AMP HTML versions of all 200,000+ directory listings in the UK Small Business Directory

Is there really any point in learning much more than the basics of AMP

With Wordpress working on plugins for AMP pages it makes you wonder if there is much point in learning any more than the basics.

Why spend hours/days/weeks learning, when Joe Blogs who knows nothing just uploads a plugin and has AMP pages as good, if not better, than anything you do?

It's a bit like learning more complicated php, js, etc. you don't really need to know what 99% of it does when using Wordpress you just click a button and it does it for you.

Is AMP going to be the same?
You won't need to understand anything, it will all be done for you via a plugin.

In a way it's good, but it's also kinda disheartening too, and almost a reason not to bother learning more.

+Rajesh Saharan yes, when I said Wordpress I should really of said all the content management and ecommerce systems.

If AMP catches on they will all have to incorporate it in to the core systems.

I shouldn't think there are many static sites built nowadays (in comparison)

Limit the number of links on a page to a reasonable number (a few thousand at most).

Nice to actually see it in writing :-)
As the owner of a business directory site, limiting the number of links on some pages can be very restricting.

If I have a category with lots of listings I don't particular want too much pagination so tend to list hundreds on a page at a time.

When each has a link to their individual listing, their county, their town, etc. it is easy to get over a 1,000 links on a page.

The clarifying that this is OK in webmaster guidelines is nice to read

Car park itself is fine with fully tarmacked surface, nicely marked spaces and plenty of room to manoeuvre. What lets Shipston Telegraph St Car Park down though is the ticket machines. They are often out of order and do not return your money when not giving tickets.

One of the best chippies I've been to. Always seems to be busy which means the food hasn't been laying in the warmers for any length of time, nice white fish and the batter is always lovely and crisp. Also do kebabs southern fried chicken and burgers. The daily specials are a great price for what you get; chips, mini-fish, small sausage and choice of beans, peas or curry sauce. Don't make the mistake of thinking you need to order a bit extra as the portion sizes are amazing.

Always clean and tidy, with very friendly and helpful staff. Seldom have to queue too long as staff often stop what they are doing and open up extra teller windows when required. The little side offices have always been tidy when I have needed them and specialist come from the bigger branches for meetings in Shipston which saves you having to travel to them.
