Writing historical fiction in any form takes work. Writing historical fiction and incorporating the paranormal is even more work. Lucille Moncrief does a great job with her second volume in this story. Even though this is the second volume in the series, it reads as a stand alone. However, if you would like to read the first volume, you can find it here. The entire Nefarious series explores human empathy and temptation. This volume shares the back story of one of the main characters during the Battle of the Somme during WWI. Talcott Henderson and his companions are stuck in a bunker during the heavy bombing of the battle, but they aren’t the only ones. Moncrief’s stream of conscious writing creates a vivid picture of how horrible war is on the people fighting. I felt like I was in the bunker next to these guys either playing cards with them or just observing as a fly on the wall. She did a good job weaving historical details throughout the story instead of relying on major info dumps. It was worth the read as it is short but packed with a lot of power and insight.

Deep, heavy books are not for summer. Summer books need to be light and fun and transport me away from the heat and humidity. This book is a fun read that just makes ya feel good. I like books written in the first person point of view when the characters are honest and I can relate to them. I like the main character and I connected with her and her struggles almost immediately. The author did a good job of not sharing every part of the story in the first chapter. I don’t want to give any spoilers so I have to be careful with what I say, but I liked how the author developed one of the storylines over time. It made me read faster because I had to know what happened. I need to note that this book is written from an English point of view, so some of the phrases and spellings may be different than American English. However, I did not feel like that took away from the story.
