Last night we went to an amazing North End restaurant called Terramia Ristorante, which was small and private with a romantic atmosphere. I started off the dinner with a delectable caprese salad which had the best tasting mozzarella cheese I’ve had outside of Italy. I then had an incredible gnocchi with a smoky red sauce dish and then finished with a crab meat and breadcrumb crusted salmon with sautéed spinach and fingerling potatoes. Absolute YUM!

A true gem among all those rhinestones in the North End, this rustic but cozy trattoria with stucco walls and beamed ceilings specializes in creative interpretations of Italian classics. Behind Terramia's pane-windowed storefront on Salem Street is a busy small trattoria decked out in linens, candlelight and paintings of the Italian countryside.

Like the cuisine here, the atmosphere is elegant yet understated. Since opening in 1993, Terramia has aimed to convince North End diners that there was always more to Italian food than red sauce. Over the Years, the inventive and beloved restaurant has done a great deal of convincing.

Terramia appears to be an idealistically charming and romantic venue but there are two issues that quickly diminish this perception. First, it is a small place where the kitchen opens onto the dinning area from which you are assaulted by rock music. The impression is that employee comfort takes precedence over customer ambiance. Second, there are about 10 tables with but one waiter and he, in my opinion, was not well suited nor trained to serve in an up-scale Italian restaurant. Meals were judged average with ample portions and the dollar oyster offering is not only a very good deal but the oysters are fresh, delectable and elegantly presented. Take a pass until the owner takes more interest.

The place is very small with no waiting area. When we arrived the hostess expected one table to finish up in the next 10 minutes so she said we should go for a drink across the road and she would hold it for us. On returning the table was waiting for us. Would give this place 6 stars if possible. Excellent ambience. Incredible food. Our server was an English dude named Andy. Very professional and attentive without constantly asking if the food was ok -- a pet peeve of mine when eating out. Swapped out the rigatoni for tagliatelle in a bolognese dish that was perfect. Fresh pasta cooked perfectly. I highly recommend this place if you want a quiet night out in old-style North End.

We decided to try Terramia based Zagat reviews but no idea what they were talking about. We each ordered the seafood pasta, special of the night. The sauce was good but the seafood was horrible. It tastes like it had been previously frozen if it wasn't then it was extremely overcooked. The service overall was horrendous. Our waiter never came over to check on us, too busy making plans for that night. Will NEVER go back or recommend.

I had dinner here based on the recommendation of a colleague. It was just me, but the hostess sat me at a roomy table for four in the back (rather than the drafty table for two up front). I had the marinated olives and the rigatoni. While the wine (Cab by the glass) was so-so, the food was very good. I was impressed by the rich creaminess of the rigatoni alla bolognese. All in all, a fine meal.

This restaurant was great. The atmosphere was quite. Interesting that the host was outside as the restaurant was small. But the food on excellent. Would go again if I had the chance. Had fried zucchini flower for appetizer and for the entree, pappardelle bolognese. Along with a glass of their house Cabernet.
