Poor Finland! Poor Nokia! Your phones were indestructible! But somehow you managed to kill them!
MIcrosoft's Finland offices and its Sales and Marketing Organization will both be impacted by the company's 7,800 job cuts. Here's COO Kevin Turner's mail to the troops.

Interestingly, only ten years ago, when I worked for the now defunct Sony-Ericsson collaboration in Lund, the company internally, in certain intranet "information" channels, highly propagandistic of course, compared itself to Nokia in many different respects, including market shares, where the mere comparison just appeared ridiculous - with Nokia back then pending between 35 and 40 percent worldwide. I will not say the coin has turned upside down, because it certainly has not; both Nokia and SE made similar strategic mistakes, by rejecting Android when the train started to roll, Nokia from an unthreatened top-position, today close to completely erased. SE could even have become a Nexus provider, had they not mistrusted everything but their own archaic technology.

Today, by the way, the top position is held by Samsung or Apple, depending on who you ask (Samsung it is, of course), somehere around 30 percent, probably below rather than above. Sony Mobile has at least got on the Android train and tried to run up, quite successfully according to some.

This story really moved me. The story of a woman. It needs to be heard for there are many women in this world who share her sad story.
Brenda Myers-Powell was raped by pimps, shot and stabbed by clients, but turned her life around - and now helps other prostitutes get off the street.

"The world will be more religious a generation from now, not less," he says. "The more religious people are, the more children they have. The more secular they are, the fewer children they have... the religious will inherit the Earth."

Do you think this is true? It is a scary thought. It will mean among other things that Islam will gradually replace Christianity in many European countries over the course of 50 years or so. Unless of course descendents of immigrants become just as secularised.
The idea of an inherent conflict between law and religion is a very modern one, says Ed Stourton.

With 7,800 more job cuts, largely from the Windows Phone business, it's time for Microsoft to give up on phones and focus where it can achieve success.

Story
Tagline
An Englishman living in Sweden with a passion for languages and Open Source software.
Introduction
My birth name is Terence Andrew Day. I was born in Birmingham and grew up in the West Midlands in a Black Country town called Oldbury. At 18 I left to study at Sheffield University, where I graduated in Germanic Studies. After graduation I moved to Denmark, got married, had children and became middle-aged. Lived in Denmark 30 years. I have recently relocated to Sweden.

I am a sci-fi and fantasy geek. I love watching old sci-fi and horror B-movies from the fifties and sixties. Trashy B-movies that are so bad, they are hilarious also find a place in my video collection.

My favourite sci-fi author is Peter F. Hamilton. His universe is as complex and satisfying as Tolkien's Middle Earth.

I switched to Linux about 8 years ago starting with Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon and regularly try out other distros. Currently running Ubuntu LTS and Linux Mint 15 KDE.

Music
I listen to anything from classical to heavy rock and metal to folk and medieval.

Digital photography
Just an amateur having fun (see my photos).

Computer gaming
I like to play fantasy RPG like Skyrim, Neverwinter, Diablo & Starcraft. I don't spend so much time these days playing, there are so many other things to do!

Nature
I am a nature lover and admire all things bright and beautiful.

Cooking
I like to cook/bake and am always interested in trying out new recipes.

Humour
British comedy mostly, we are world leaders in it after all! A sense of humour and not taking myself too seriously is what you will discover if you circle me.

Very good food and service! The owner is Danish! Small and cosy place that is also very popular with the locals. Authentic tapas bar where you feel welcome. I highly recommend it!

For those interested in Viking/Danish history, this place must be on your list! Apart from the actual ring fortress itself you can see a Viking village, a reconstructed iron age log house, and in the museum artefacts recovered during excavation of the fortress. The fortress is from the 10th century and presumably built during Harald Bluetooth's reign. Good museum shop and friendly staff.

Have eaten there two times so far. Excellent food and good friendly service. Prices are also reasonable. You must try their meat pasties, aubergine with goat's cheese, duck ham, and not least a fantastic lemon sorbet! Very authentic and full of locals. Come around 19.00 before the rush! Menus are available in English too.

Ignore the German review that is 3 years old. I ate there a couple of days ago (January 17, 2013). I ordered a lamb curry (one of the specialties of the house), samosas and a roti. Everything tasted excellent. I was promptly served and enjoyed very much the decor of the restaurant. I know my curries and frequently make Indian food at home (I am a Brit!), the food here was very good. Compared to Denmark the prices are very reasonable too. I can highly recommend House of India and will probably eat there again next time I visit Erlangen.
