When it comes to my activities, my work, my interests, my home life, everything is so closely connected to this life as a monk. My life IS it, and aimed at leading a life that will follow the path laid out by the Buddha. I’m content with that, and I live a much simpler life because of it. It’s not at all an easy path, and there’s definitely no shortage of hard work both internal and external. I live, work, study and practice at a Buddhist monastery and I have been for over 12 years.
None of this is at all possible without the immeasurable kindness and patience of those around me; my teachers, the community at Nalanda Monastery and especially those who have the immense kindness to help support the western monastics worldwide. Without them, the challenges I would face in order to offer spiritual support to others would be far greater. They all bring so much inspiration to my life, and provide everything needed for me to really focus on the precious gift of practice I have in each moment. Words are not sufficient to express the depth of my gratitude or the breadth of what everybody around me enables me to do.
Along with serving the monastery in the role of Garden Manager, I love to spend time with animals, which is probably why I also have the responsibility to care for any animals that come to us. At the moment, I care for 7 or 8 cats (4 of which are wild and at different levels of trusting me). I take care of their needs through 2 very kind sponsors who help me, and any other work that comes my way with animals that are brought to the monastery for care and general TLC. I very much enjoy that.
There is so much to say, and little space to say it! In which case, I look forward to exchange, sharing and a lot of fun in the future with you, and anyone who cares to join us.
