What would it look like to fly past Triton, the largest moon of planet Neptune?

Only one spacecraft has ever done this -- the images of this encounter have been gathered into a below movie. Watch it here: http://youtu.be/b7sKqDAEndE

A Green Flash from the Sun!

Daniel López's fantastic image shows a green flash from the sun. Just as the setting sun disappears completely from view, a last glimmer appears startlingly green. The effect is typically visible only from locations with a low, distant horizon, and lasts just a few seconds.

Why would a bright full Moon suddenly become dark? Because it entered the shadow of the Earth.

Almost two weeks ago this exact event happened as the Moon underwent a total lunar eclipse. That eclipse, visible from the half of the Earth then facing the Moon, was captured in numerous spectacular photographs and is depicted in a time lapse video covering about an hour.

The video, recorded from Mt. Lemmon Sky Center in Arizona, USA, keeps the Earth shadow centered and shows the Moon moving through it from west to east.

Astronomy Picture of the Day - An Unusual Globule in IC 1396

Is there a monster in IC 1396? Known to some as the Elephant's Trunk Nebula, parts of gas and dust clouds of this star formation region may appear to take on foreboding forms, some nearly human.

What do you think?

What's that approaching?

Astronauts on board the International Space Station first saw it in early 2010 far in the distance. The object revealed itself to be the Space Shuttle Endeavour, and it soon docked as expected with the Earth-orbiting space station. Pictured below, Endeavour was imaged near Earth's horizon as it approached, where several layers of the Earth's atmosphere were visible.

The Hercules Cluster of Galaxies!

These are galaxies of the Hercules Cluster, an archipelago of island universes a mere 500 million light-years away. The colors in this remarkably deep composite image clearly show the star forming galaxies with a blue tint and galaxies with older stellar populations with a yellowish cast.

Wow! What a fantastic picture!

This fantastic skyscape lies near the edge of NGC 2174 a star forming region about 6,400 light-years away in the nebula-rich constellation of Orion.

What would it be like to fall to Earth from really high up?

A new record for the highest jump was accomplished in 2012 by Felix Baumgartner. The below video records his four minutes and 19 seconds of free fall in real time.

Sunspot Loops in Ultraviolet:

It was a quiet day on the Sun. The above image shows, however, that even during off days the Sun's surface is a busy place. Shown in ultraviolet light, the relatively cool dark regions have temperatures of thousands of degrees Celsius.
