I can see it's well intentioned, but for god's sake, we already festoon ourselves with lights, hi-vis and reflectives. It makes not a jot of difference if drivers don't look, intentionally distract themselves, or just don't care to arrive at the next red light a second or so later. Now you have to rattle can your bike as well?
I've been luckier than some, but last time I was hit, I had a hi-vis vest on (with reflectives on that and my arms), three good quality front lights, and two good quality back lights (all running). In most cases, it isn't that drivers can't see you, it's that they're impatient, agressive, or distracted.
This stuff really comes across as victim blaming to me, I'm afraid.37w
- Ian BartonModeratorQuite agree, in most cases it's not the case of driver not being able to see you. It's a long time since I have been knocked off my bike (tempting fate there:). However, there have been fairly frequent near misses. Most of these are drivers trying to squeeze past me, only for me to catch up with them a hundred yards later.
Perhaps the learning to drive should include a compulsory 2 week spell of having to cycle in a busy town or city.37w
- I'm a cyclist, but see other riders on shaded country roads in bad light, without reflectors or lights, wearing dark tops all the time. I frankly expect them to die soon. This could save them!
Just ride responsibly, or expect problems. We cyclists are vulnerable, doing more to be viable is just good sense.35w
- And pedestrians? Horses? Cats?
Must they all be attired in fluorescent yellow to be spared that grim judgement? When I learnt to drive, I was taught to slow down and take more care when visibility was bad. Not to shift that responsibility for avoiding collisions to the more vulnerable.
And to reiterate, failure to look is more common than failure to see as a cause of driver at fault collisions.35w
