The point is sometimes you want someone to see a picture, but you don't want them to be able to save it and share it without your knowledge. So you use an app like Snapchat. I've never used it personally, but I can see how it could be useful. 
Like it or not, it will be used for sexting just like MMS is. Most parents are clueless what their kids do on their phones. I caught my daughter sexting and now I get a copy of all her texts to keep her from doing something stupid again. Boys are relentless when trying to get inappropriate photos of girls. I've seen it first hand. Snapchat gives kids another avenue to do things they shouldn't be doing. You are living under a rock if you don't think so. They may feel it's safe but it only takes a second to take a screen shot.
