Goodnight Moon took on a philosophical meaning after the 314th time I read it. There is no moon.
I like to use a little invention called the library.  Our public library (Allen County, Indiana) will put collections together for you.  You fill out a form online with the reading level, desired topic, and special requests (e.g. dyslexic-friendly), and all you have to do is pick up the bin full of materials.  The collections service is great for college and adult-level research, as well.
I think that this is a good idea. I have known a lot of people who don't really read that much, and because of that their parents don't bother to waste time buying anything for them. I think that receiving books every month will help to encourage them to read.
