Coursera now lets students earn "verified certificates" for the classes that they take.

I've actually take a couple of courses and though no you don't get any credit they're great for learning. 
It would certainly help in the "continuing education" for adults who can't afford to take leave from work. For them, certification isn't necessarily the motivation. Just acquiring the skill and in some cases understanding the concept is sufficient.
