A few people have asked for the list of songs and readings performed at last week’s Secular Solstice. Here they are, with authorship information and links.

Recently, effective altruist spaces have been subject to metastasizing controversies, to the detriment of the movement. This might be fixable with better social technology.

The Dark Art of Causal Self-Modeling

What happens when you try to predict how your own future mental states will affect your actions? It’s dangerous, but often necessary.

It'Epistemic rationality is widely thought of as something you do for yourself, by yourself. Here, I suggest that social collaboration has an underappreciated role to play.

Wait, you're a Rationalist? ROKO'S BASILISK IS COMING FOR YOU!! There, now enjoy your time bringing about the Singularity.

ahem Anyway, an interesting point you're making. The biggest danger, of course, is that when you have multiple people, and they all get stuck on an incorrect idea, then there can be even more reenforcement of it than could come from an individual. Still, I think that risk is worth it, since you are right, it can be very, very hard to actually identify and remove all of the irrationalities in yourself.

Part of what you need to overcome when you've got other people is the "A criticism of my idea is perceived as an attack on my identity and thus my self." I think your descriptions of fostering safe spaces is one piece of addressing this, and another is probably being reassured that everyone is on the "same side" (where that side is along the lines of "furthering rational thought").

A revolution in charitable giving is underway, focused on using science to find where we can do the most good with our limited resources. This has given rise to a new movement: effective altruism.

TL;DR: Iff the potential for people like you to benefit from such an event is a significant causal component of the possibility of that event happening.

A Hofstadterism is a principle which tells you to adjust for it even if you think you already have—a seemingly paradoxical idea that proves surprisingly applicable to human reasoning.

Ah... Nitpick: "If the correct answer is always to update in the same direction—in the original example, to always make your estimated completion time later, no matter how late it already is—then don’t you end up predicting that it will take an infinite amount of time?" - No, that does not actually follow - it depends on the magnitude of the update at each application. Nor, I assert without strong proof, do you actually guarantee non-convergence of the literal application of a converging hofstadterism by applying it recursively to converged versions of itself - although that does loop through the concept of "algorithm" in such a broad way that I am quite sure that any least upper bound to the estimation is not possible to compute.

Escape from the Bottomless Pit

A psychological difficulty that effective altruists have to deal with is that we generally can’t see the concrete results of our efforts. Here I lay out the problem and some things that can be done to mitigate its effects.

A Brief Overview of the Effective Charity Landscape, Part 1: Global Poverty

The most popular causes among effective altruists are those relating to the great humanitarian crisis of our age: global poverty. Most of the best interventions that have been found in this area have to do with health. This post provides an overview of…

Helping those in need is supposed to give you a warm glow. But it doesn’t work for everyone—and it can be dangerously misleading. Here, I look at other motivations to give.

Story

Nerd/geek who will one day figure out how to describe himself in one sentence.
Introduction
My quest to put myself into words continues unabated, so here's what I have so far: I'm Taymon A. Beal, a student of computer science at WPI. I love programming, theater technology, philosophy, comedy, geek culture, and all kinds of other things. I generally try to get the most out of life since it's actually pretty awesome, and am constantly looking for new ways to do so. And I never stop thinking. Ever.
