Please share if you agree (or comment if my idea is dumb). This +Bloomberg article got me thinking about a topic I've been trying to suggest to some tech blogs and sites. Pretty much everyone does an excellent job of reviewing individual devices, but I think most fail at reviewing the total customer experience that mobile brands offers to their customers.

Tech reviewers get dozens of devices to check out each year, so they normally only spend a couple days or weeks with a product before posting their final review. They don't go through the purchase process, and they don't get to live with the product for over a year, so they miss out on a huge chunk of the total customer experience that most consumers get.

Android security updates are an important topic, and some like +JR Raphael does a great job with his report cards, but that's still just a fraction of the total customer experience.

I think it's time for someone to start reviewing the brands for the experience they provide during the entire life-cycle of a device. What was the purchase process like? What finance options are offered? What is the returns process like? How consistent are software updates delivered? What are warranty repairs like? What happens if you need an out-of-warranty repair? How responsive is customer service when you need help? What is a company's rating with the BBB? What loyalty or rewards program does a brand offer to retain their customers? Does a brand support the development community? Is there any trade-in program offered when it's time to upgrade? etc...

The answers to most of the questions above is already out there on the internet, but it is buried deep in online forums or subreddits and it's not easily scannable or sortable.

If a site will invest the resources to conduct these type of brand scorecards that I imagine, then they will be greatly rewarded from the revenue they can earn from driving online sales. Consumers will also benefit by finding the devices that meet their needs, and brands will benefit by being rewarded for their good services (and getting more data on areas they can improve).

What do you think?
Getting phone makers and carriers to update to the latest version of Android has been one of the thorniest challenges facing Google as it tries to widen the use of its mobile software and generate more sales from its apps and web services.

My wife and I love our aging MT2s. The purchasing experience was great for both of us. The time we have spent with these phones has ruined us. We are budget minded and the choice to buy a phone off contract at a great price is what made our decision easy for the Mate 2. While my mt2 runs CyogenMod hers is stock. Another great thing Huawei has been doing is working well with developers. I also had high hopes for the honor 5x and was not let down. While my wife and I are rather ruined to phones smaller than the Mate 2 we will have to upgrade one day. Like us the mt2 us showing its age. 😉 It seems that newer Huawei phones are getting updates and hope to see that trend continue. Keep getting better. "Dream it Possible"

Honor Global just started promoting a special trial program in select countries that lets customers get a full refund up to 60 days after purchase if they are unhappy with the device. Is this something you would like to see come to the US? Are there other types of trial programs you would like to see offered?

"I’m still using the Huawei P9. Have I taken leave of my senses?"
I finished writing my review of the Huawei P9 on Friday. Today’s Tuesday, I have a Galaxy S7 and two iPhones in my immediate vicinity, and I’m still using the Huawei P9. Have I taken leave of my...
