The latest Inkscape release (0.92) supports SVG mesh gradients. Browsers have not indicated they will support meshes soon. I've written a polyfill that renders meshes in both inline and stand-alone SVG.
SVG Mesh Polyfill. Last updated 12 January 2017. SVG Meshes allow real life shadings. They are supported by the latest version of Inkscape (0.92). Until browsers have implemented meshes natively, one can use a JavaScript polyfill to render them. Just before the closing tag in your file: For HTML:

I've posted my report of the SVG Working Group Sydney meetings. Our one day meeting with the CSS group was very fruitful in the area of text. We are getting close to getting SVG 2 out the door so a lot of our time was devoted to specification editing. Thanks to all those that donated to the Inkscape SVG Working Group fund and the Inskcape general fund that made my trip to Sydney possible.
The SVG Working Group had a four day face-to-face meeting in Sydney this month. Like last year, the first day was a joint meeting with the CSS Working Group. I would like to thank all the people that donated to Inkscape's SVG Standards Work fund as well as to the Inkscape general fund that made ...

I've added support for Font Features in Inkscape trunk. Here's a short blog about it.

Hi, since blog comments are closed, I wanted to congratulate for your amazing work on this. There is now a fairly easy way for users to see this in action with "sandboxed apps" https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/SandboxedApps/NightlyBuilds that run on a variety of GNU/Linux distributions. I have been using the Inkscape nightly build and I enjoyed a lot playing with all the OpenType features of EB Garamond and Libertine.

Just added text on basic shapes (rectangles, circles, ellipses, etc.) to SVG 2. No good pictures to link to since Google+ doesn't allow SVG. Bad Google+.

Martin,

That is something we've discusses with the CSS working group. I think we all agree that it is useful feature but it's not likely to happen soon.

The recent video "Computer Color is Broken" has set off a small storm on the Internet. We (Inkscape) have even received a bug report about broken color as a result. Blending isn't the only place where using a linear color space is important, as mentioned in my just updated "Color Space and Interpolation" page.
Color Space and Interpolation. Last updated 23 March 2015. The color space used for combining colors or interpolating between color values greatly effects the resulting colors. Most software today uses the sRGB color space. Blending/interpolating in this color space usually leads to unexpected ...

Concerning fonts, I downloaded several Irish fonts but do not find them in my list of fonts in Inkscape although I did a spiral truetype font that DID make it in. Any advice? Other question about fonts has to do with changing words to outlines of the letters. I'm sending the graphics to a laser engraver and see no reason for the laser to engrave away the entire inside part of the letter. Time wasting at the least. BTW, I am a complete neophyte at this. Early in this project, I somehow, accidentally, DID achieve the desired result but have no idea how, just ended up "knowing" that it is possible. Does not work with View-Display Mode-Toggle. Thanks.

The SVG 2 specification has finally made it to "Candidate Recommendation" status!
Abstract. This specification defines the features and syntax for Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) Version 2. SVG is a language based on XML for describing two-dimensional vector and mixed vector/raster graphics. SVG content is stylable, scalable to different display resolutions, and can be viewed ...

A blog post to help me remember exactly how CSS 'line-height' works.
Want evenly spaced lines of text like when writing on the lined paper we all used as kids? Should be easy. Turns out with CSS it is not. This post will show why. It is the result of too much time reading specs and making tests as I worked on Inkscape's multi-line text.

Just finished a two part tutorial on creating custom SVG filters with Inkscape.
Part 1 introduces SVG filter primitives and demonstrates the creation of a Fabric filter effect. Part 2 shows various ways to colorize the fabric. Introduction. SVG filters allow bitmap-type manipulations inside a vector format. Scalability is preserved by pushing the bitmap processing to the ...

A blog post on problems with stroking and offsetting paths.
Paths: Stroking and Offsetting. Posted on April 13, 2015 by Tavmjong Bah. Path stroking and offsetting are two intertwined topics; stroking is often implemented by path offsetting. This post explores some of the problems encountered with these path operations.
